Yes that would be fine But if you're using a sweetened version you'll have to reduce the
amount of other sweetener you use or else it will be too sweet.
While I have already cut out refined sugars, I am going to limit my
intake of other sweeteners, including dried fruit, maple syrup, agave and stevia.
I've also added flour and coconut to frosting (see our vanilla caramel cupcakes recipe) to try to decrease the
use of other sweeteners.
I'm extremely allergic to sugar in any form, and detest the
taste of other sweeteners such as stevia, and won't even consider such atrocities as aspartame or other artificial junk.
Date nectar is one of my favourite sweeteners as it has such an incredibly rich flavour that really adds depth to whatever I'm making, it's so much more exciting than
lots of other sweeteners in that way which only has sweetness but nothing else.

know of any other sweetener to recommend: (I'm pretty sure coconut sugar is real sugar with real carbs, but if that's all you can use, just track it and use it very sparingly!!

Your recipe looks a lot like one I use, but I use a mix of maple syrup and honey instead
of other sweeteners.
