Damage to the cellular DNA occurs when the body has insufficient hydrogen ions to counter balance the normal
supply of oxygen ions.
This in situ method allowed us to apply short voltage pulses and thereby control the migration
of oxygen ions in our sample,» explains Academy of Finland Research Fellow Lide Yao.
In 2008, sensors onboard Japan's Kaguya moon - orbiting probe detected a dramatic change in the
kinds of oxygen ions striking the craft during a narrow window each month.
Researchers have proposed a new way to detect radioactive material using two co-located laser beams that interact with elevated
levels of oxygen ions near a gamma - ray emitting source.
Their method cleverly utilizes the rattling motion caused by the
vibration of oxygen ions inside the cage - like structures of the crystal.
Andersen adds that the results could help in understanding all planetary atmospheres that contain large
amounts of oxygen ions.
ICING OUT An unusual form of ice is made of a solid
lattice of oxygen ions (circles in this illustration) through which hydrogen ions travel freely (pink trails), like a liquid.
He first depicted its surface using SPM and then repeated the process 12 times, shaving away a 100 nanometer layer of the sample with a
beam of oxygen ions before each step.
The researchers found that migration
of oxygen ions away from the contact area results in an abrupt change in the oxide lattice structure and an increase of electrical resistance.
«To do this,» explains Antonio Cabrera Lavers, head of astronomy at the GTC and one of the authors of the paper, «we have used for the first time the blue tunable filter of OSIRIS to take a deep image centred on the emission from the recombination lines of one
of the oxygen ions in the planetary nebula 6778.»
This flickering typically oscillates at a 1/10 second period, which is equivalent to the ion cyclotron frequency (* 1)
of oxygen ions.
