It looks to me like Lufthansa has just recently released quite a bit
of partner award availability for travel from the US to Europe this summer in Business Class.
Not exact matches
While several airlines, including United, Japan Airlines, and All Nippon Airways, offer direct flights between New York and Tokyo, Korean Air offers the most frequent flyer
award availability — useful for us, since we only had a little bit
of schedule flexibility — and is a transfer
partner of Chase, whose points we had already started to earn.
Since Aeromexico is a member
of the SkyTeam alliance, you can also book
award travel on some
of its
partner airlines, however,
award availability on these will vary.
Option # 5: Look for
awards travel on
partner airlines; some
of them may end up being cheaper than flights on Delta, and you may find better
availability.
If you can get roughly equal value by redeeming points directly through Ultimate Rewards and not worry about
award availability or a limited number
of partners, why would you waste your energies on transferring them to an external loyalty program?
As you search for
award availability with
partners, you can reference the Oneworld and other
partners» AA
award charts to determine the number
of AA miles you will need to book.
Until recently, Korean Air did not provide a way to search online for
award availability on any
of its
partner airlines.
Option # 5: Look for
awards travel on
partner airlines; some
of them may end up being cheaper than flights on Delta, and you may find better
availability.
They don't let you book First Class
awards with
partners at all, they rarely have low - level
award availability (and I think this might get worse after the recent devaluation), you can only redeem round trip flights (one - ways are coming in 2015 though), and in general their miles are much harder to use than those
of other programs.
Lufthansa generally only releases
award seats to
partners within a week or so
of departure, so you can book business class and change to first - class if
availability opens up.

of interest to people who live outside
of the United Kingdom.
Despite the dramatic devaluation in terms
of earning and redeeming miles in 2014, United MileagePlus remains one
of the most valuable U.S. frequent flyer programs with the biggest number
of airline
partners and a generally good
award availability.
Having the option to transfer points over to Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer is a nice bonus as Singapore Airlines has a habit
of offering better
award availability to its own rewards program members than it does to members
of its airline
partners» programs (United MileagePlus, Lufthansa Miles & More etc...)
(I didn't do too much searching, since I was on a mission to book my specific flight, but presumably, you'd have more luck searching all Avios
award availability, through more
of the
partners — e.g. Aer Lingus, BA, and Iberia.)
Fortunately you can compare the
award prices and
availability of multiple
partners before you move your ThankYou Rewards points to any
of them.
And you don't want to just scan for any
availability, you need to scan for the types
of awards that you can book through alliance
partners.
A lot
of alliance
partners don't allow you to search for
award availability for other
partners on their website and that's really annoying because that means you'll always have to call in to book and you're not sure what that airline is seeing in terms
of award availability.
Because they all have a huge range
of transfer
partners and so when I need an
award flight, I'm not limited to one program's abysmal
availability.
The ability to get 2 cents per point on a wide variety
of airline bookings without having to transfer points to
partners and find
award availability significantly increases the value
of your Membership Rewards.
But here's the very important thing to know: Not all
partners will show up on an airline's online
award booking — and the Big Three have some
of the worst
availability of Saver (low) level
awards of any airlines.
Since Alaska Airlines is not aligned with any alliance, they have a unique range
of partners that cover most
of the globe, and allow you to easily find
award availability.
US Airways»
award flight search engine, for example, only shows
award availability for US Airways operated flights, and none
of the
partner flights.
Its a great thing to be aware and share the sweet spots on
award charts but its really not that cut and dry IMHO For example Alaska is not a One World
partner and while they certainly make some
availability available to Alaska its a much smaller pool
of inventory and frequently only available close to departure to book Added to that you can not mix any other One World
partner on the itinerary making it not the sweet spot its made out to be when you have to book yet another
award that would be included otherwise with a One World
partner booking using Cathay
United.com shows
award availability for most
partners and it shows the taxes and fees very clearly for each portion
of your flight.
Between those 3 search engines you should almost always be able to find
award availability searching through dozens
of partner airlines.
The two challenges are that they're a member
of Skyteam, so their
partners aren't as good and don't often offer as good
award availability as some
of their competitors, and also that you have to deal with the idiosyncrasies
of Korean — rules like only redeeming your points for family members.
Overall, this partnership is good news because Virgin Atlantic is a transfer
partner of American Express Membership Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards and Starwood Preferred Guest, so there are now more options to book Delta flights without having SkyMiles (though
partners like Virgin Atlantic only get access to low - level
awards, meaning
availability can be slim on certain routes).
Here's my dilemma: I can be poised to check ANA for
award availability on United or another Star Alliance
partner 356 days in advance
of the outbound leg — but if I want to use ANA miles to book a round trip
award, don't I have to wait to book until the requisite number
of days before the return leg, since ANA doesn't allow one ways?
There's also a bit
of a learning curve for finding
partner award availability, since it doesn't show up on the Korean Air website.
Nonetheless, the convenience
of advance
award availability on such stellar
partners pushes my valuation slightly above the higher end
of the range
of the above examples: my valuation is 2 cents per American AAdvantage mile.

of the Ultimate Rewards Skyteam
partners, there must be
award space available at the saver level on Delta.
