Personal income
tax applies to all income sources
of residents
of Canada, except for such amounts as gifts, inheritances, lottery winnings, and veterans» disability
pensions.
Payments totaling an estimated $ 14.2 billion went to recipients
of Social Security, supplemental security income, railroad retirement benefits, and veterans» disability compensation or
pension benefits (Urban - Brookings
Tax Policy Center 2009h).
In the six - month period
of fiscal 2018, the company incurred gains
of $ 14 million in Other expenses / (income)($ 10 million after
tax, or $.03 per share) associated with mark - to - market adjustments for defined benefit
pension and postretirement plans.
For the year ended July 30, 2017, the company incurred gains
of $ 178 million in Other expenses / (income)($ 116 million after
tax, or $.38 per share) associated with mark - to - market adjustments for defined benefit
pension and postretirement plans.
This includes the splitting
of pension income for seniors, (to make amends for breaking its promise on the taxation
of family trusts); special
tax preferences to support participation
of youth in sports activities, arts and cultural activities;
tax breaks for people who take public transit; and,
tax breaks to help volunteer firemen.

tax rules and abuses, including large corporations shifting income overseas to avoid Canadian
taxes, the ability to deduct and split the fat
pensions of government employees and even the ability for some to set up fake private companies to benefit from small business
tax provisions.
