Our customers benefit with a product that is compostable, does not contain any bisphenol (including BPA and over a dozen other derivatives), and is
free of phthalates which are known endocrine disruptors.
Phthalates have been linked to reproductive disorders in both males and females, endocrine disruption, allergies and breast cancer, and a study conducted by Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health showed that children subject to high
levels of phthalates in utero were 70 percent more likely to develop asthma between the ages of 5 and 12.
High levels
of phthalates in the baby wash get absorbed in the baby's bodies and samples of urine might just prove if the soap you are using on baby has this harmful substance.
«At least a dozen studies have shown the effects
of phthalates on human reproduction,» says University of Rochester epidemiologist and biostatistician Shanna Swan, the lead author of a much - cited study that showed higher exposure to some phthalates in mothers correlates with reduced «anogenital distance» in newborn boys.
Study findings: The infertile men had increased
amounts of phthalates in their urine which correlated with them having significantly lower levels of hormones, specifically serum Inhibin B, the Inhibin B to FSH ratio, the TT to LH ratio and the level of INSL3.
The plasticizer in question is called bis (2 - ethylhexyl) phthalate, or DEHP, which is «ubiquitous» in the environment, said Shanna Swan, a reproductive epidemiologist at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York who has studied the
effects of phthalates on infant boys.
For adults, food is a major
source of phthalates such as DEHP, which may be used in some food packaging or processing equipment.
Check out our interview with Dr. Zota on her recent study, which tracked levels
of phthalate exposure in people:
Artificial fragrances are typically
made of phthalates which are chemicals known as a hormone disrupter.
While it's clear that high
doses of phthalates are harmful to animals, it remains to be shown whether these effects translate to humans.
The authors believe theirs is among the first human studies to investigate the
influence of phthalate exposure on sperm epigenetics, embryo development and whether DNA methylation in sperm cells may be a path by which a father's environmental exposure influences these endpoints.
Those with higher levels of certain
kinds of phthalates were more likely to have diabetes even after adjusting for obesity, blood lipids, smoking, and exercise habits.
Typical waterproof covers and pads use vinyl / PVC, which releases dioxin into the environment during production and requires the
use of phthalates that are harmful to both children and the environment.
Traces of phthalates, a chemical found in food packaging and equipment, were detected in products of powdered macaroni and cheese mixes, according to a study by the Coalition for Safer Food Processing & Packaging.
DEHPs are the most commonly used
class of phthalates, and the same rules of avoidance apply for them.
In female babies, hCG explained about 8
percent of phthalates» effect on the genitals and in males, it was responsible for 20 to 30 percent, the researchers reported.
«Our study is the first to show that hCG is a
target of phthalate exposure in early pregnancy and to confirm previous findings that it is a critical hormone in male development,» Adibi said.
At the Heritage Canada convention in Ottawa recently, Rick Smith, co-author of Slow Death by Rubber Duck discussed the
dangers of phthalates, the plasticizer that is mixed into vinyl to make it flexible, and that's found in many of the building products we use.
Also remember that a lot of the time, synthetic fragrances are made
up of phthalates.
Some of the different forms
of phthalates include DBP (di - n - butyl phthalate), DEP (diethyl phthalate), DEHP (di -(2 - ethylhexyl) phthalate or bis (2 - ethylhexyl) phthalate), BzBP (benzylbutyl phthalate), and DMP (dimethyl phthalate), among others.
Loblaw has followed suit of companies like Unilever, Johnson & Johnson, and P&G, which in 2013 announced the
ban of phthalates and triclosan in its beauty and personal care products, in response to decade long pressure from activist groups prompting consumer goods company to stop using chemicals that have been linked to birth defects, cancer, diabetes and infertility.
FSANZ commissioned a follow - up
survey of phthalates and other plasticisers in a range of foods in mid-2016 to address to the need for more comprehensive data.
The result: the more products that parents used on their babies, the higher the concentrations
of phthalates found in their urine, leading to the hypothesis that phthalates enter children's bodies not only when substances containing this chemical enter through their mouths but also through their skin.
With the growing
knowledge of phthalates, VOCs, and toxic flame retardants in conventional mattresses, new parents are increasingly interested in organic mattresses for their babies and children.
The DREAM ON ME 150ULTRA COIL INNER SPRING CRIB MATTRESS is
constructed of phthalate, and quality materials that are lead free.
Meeting all standards and exceeding a current
standards of phthalates, those are set by a CPSC and the federal flammability, which standard 16 CFR 1633.
Packaging and plastics used for kids and babies are reportedly free
of phthalates due to the 2008 bill, but they're still present in other materials that babies are exposed to.
Despite these disheartening figures, there are still steps that parents can take to reduce the
intake of phthalates.
The European Union restricted the
sale of phthalate - laced toys in 1999 and recently beefed up controls.
A vast body of scientific evidence shows that phthalates break down within minutes and are quickly eliminated from the body,» Lisa Dry, a spokesperson for the American Chemistry Council, which represents
manufacturers of phthalates, said in an emailed response.
His argument, as summarized in the ruling, is that «the transfusion theory is scientifically impossible» and that «a
spike of phthalates can be attributed to any number of legitimate reasons.»
Among boys ages 6 - 12, increased concentrations of metabolites
of a phthalate called di -(2 - ethylhexyl) phthalate, or DEHP, was linked to a 24 to 34.1 percent drop in testosterone levels.
They also found a connection between concentrations
of these phthalates with BMI and waist circumference in overweight kids.
They measured the levels
of phthalate flowing through the bodies of pregnant women, and then later measured the size and characteristics of their infant sons» genitals after birth, between ages two months to three years.
So, for example, in one analysis, while total dairy consumption was significantly associated with one
of the phthalate chemicals, it was the eggs and the poultry consumption, in particular, that was a significant predictor of levels of MEHP, as well as total phthalates.
«A diet filled with whole foods offers a variety of health benefits that go far beyond the
question of phthalates.»
Concern has been raised over potential endocrine - disrupting
properties of phthalates (Crisp et al. 1998; U.S. EPA 2007), particularly evidence suggesting antiandrogenic effects during prenatal development (Meeker et al. 2009; Swan et al. 2005).
For example, the chemistry council notes, it was the
addition of a phthalate known as DEHP to polyvinyl chloride — normally a brittle plastic — that made possible the blood bag that we know today, which brought about a revolution in blood storage and delivery.
NOTE: this is NOT a blanket release of vinyl from the evil materials department, it is still
full of phthalates and should not be in kids mouths and used any more than necessary.
