If you can pipe the decorations right
on the cake, I'd just use a stiffer buttercream for it instead

Royal Icing.

I tend to use
Royal Icing when you need to make something that needs to be a) demensional (ie: stand up
on top
of the cake and needs to harden for several days before hand) or b) made ahead
of time because there's no way you could do it all the night before the party * wink *
Then dry and pipe
on colours
of royal icing beads or do I need to apply a layer
of royal icing over the crumb coat before piping.
Birds were piped and then flooded with
royal icing (you can choose any colour you prefer) and then placed in the nest and
on the edge with a dab
of brown
royal icing.
