Since merle only affects eumelaninG, the pattern isn't visible at all in yellow dogs, and only in the hair tip color
of sable dogs.

In some
dogs, if the
sable color is very light it will not show up in a picture
of the
dog.
This
dog carries two copies
of ky which allows for the expression
of the agouti gene (A locus) which can result in a variety
of coat colors including
sable / fawn, tricolor, tan points, black or brown.
Orange and orange
sable dogs became very popular in the beginning
of the 20th century and keep the leading position until today.
Dogs with one or two copies
of KB will not express agouti coat colors (
sable / fawn, tricolor, black and tan, or tan points) and their coat color would be solid in pigmented areas as determined by the E and B genes.
But there are over 30 breeds
of livestock guardian
dogs, & most
of them come in many other colors, including white but also black, black & tan, brindle,
sable, agouti, particolor, ticked, gray, fawn, red, blue, liver, etc., & can be any
of these with any varying degrees
of white markings or no white at all.
The
dog breed can have the following types
of markings: brindle, dapple,
sable, brindle piebald, double dapple and piebald.
Sable (A ^ y) is a dominant gene, so a
dog only needs one copy
of the gene to be a
sable.

So a
sable dog who is also carrying 2 copies
of the chinchilla gene will have a gray base to the coat, rather than yellow (sometimes this is seen in Belgian Tervurens).
In some yellow (and
sable)
dogs, the center part
of their black nose will fade to pink (called «snow nose») but the other dark skin pigment is not affected.
In
sable dogs, a percentage
of the hairs will have black (or red) tips.
Sable German Shepherds keep developing their final color up until the
dog reaches the age
of three (or so)- so you'll never really know what the final color
of sable German Shepherds will really be until the
dog is completely mature.
Color categorization
of sables can be quite difficult when the
dog is tattooed or photographed early in its life as the choice
of color is often incorrect when you see this
dog later in its life (because the coat color can change so dramatically as the
dog matures).
The
sable GSD often closely resembles their two - toned counterparts, such as the black and tan saddle back GSD's, but the
sable dogs individual hairs have more than one color on each
of them creating a very unique pattern specific only to that individual
dog.
It is true, that, left alone to reproduce naturally, purebred
dogs would probably become homogenized into a prototypical pariah dog — about 45 pounds in weight, 18 - 20 inches tall, yellow or sable colored, with upright ears and a long, slightly curled tail — similar to the Dingo of Australia, Canaan Dog of Israel or Carolina Dogs of the Southeastern

With the three coat varieties to choose from and two official sizes (Standards are usually from 16 to 32 lbs and Minis are under 11 lbs;

There is no direct test for the Wild type (think wolf pattern) allele which is designated aw.Any
dog which has at least one copy
of Ay (and no KB) will be fawn or
sable, either with or without brindling.Any

In fawn /
sable dogs this test shows if other agouti alleles are present but hidden (only one copy
of Ay).
Testing for this mutation along with Ay and recessive black (a) also allows for the identification
