After 37 years working mostly in courtrooms, including 22 years on the bench, I feel that it is time to explore other ways to be
of service to society.
While geo - specifically Canadian, and working within a coloniality of power that I often felt obliged to critique, I think my identity growing up in Canada was more mobile than nationalist, if not badly mangled, bleeding through the figurative membranes of its Canadian - ness, as something that was always already foreign to itself, as I really didn't have a sense of what it meant to be a Canadian but at the same time I tried to account for the people I met and the ideas I encountered in the context of living a life in the service of something larger than one's nation state, trying to understand what it meant to be
of service to society.
Any particular such technological and practical pressure can usually be justified, of course, by the higher cause
of service to society, or at least by its profitability.
Is there nothing more here than an appeal for an aristocratic spirit
of service to society in a bourgeois liberal world?

society marked by caring, justice, responsibility, interest in others, and relief from oppression, devoted
to everything positive which promotes the fullest actualization
of human possibility.
Also, they may hold that even Christians are not free from the effects
of original sin, so that for them, too, the discipline
of want, when they fail
to perform their due
service to society, is desirable.
Moreover, equating same - sex unions with marriage would be a terrible injustice
to married men and women, who perform an indispensable
service to the common good
of society.
In
service to that mission — and, increasingly, in opposition
to contemporary North American culture — we have jointly affirmed that all are called
to protect the most vulnerable members
of our
society, particularly the elderly, the handicapped and the unborn.
