Kim Shufan, executive director of the iCan House in Winston - Salem, an organization that offers programs that teach and coach youths and adults with social challenges, cautions that special needs children, especially those on the autism spectrum, may mask their behavior at a doctor's visit.

There is every reason in the world to not be physically active; reading to our children, providing quality meals, addressing their social needs, researching all medications / foods / education, shopping to have the «best» deals on the highest quality, spending quality play time with our children, limiting screen time, grooming them, keeping house, bonding, learning and executing proper child passenger safety (installing that perfect car seat that took 3 weeks of research and a small loan to purchase), and being sure every minute of their every day is filled with only the best developmentally appropriate activities.

In my years as lead parent, I have gotten the kids out of the house in the morning; enforced bedtimes at night; monitored computer and TV use; attempted to ensure that homework got done right; encouraged involvement in sports and music; attended the baseball games, piano lessons, plays, and concerts that resulted; and kept tabs on social lives.

The politically sensitive issue affects all the children in the city of 2,300 who use the city's youth house, 17 W 261 Butterfield Rd., for social events on weeknights and as a haven for latchkey children after school.

Try to keep your daytime hours free of time wasters — the obvious ones are time online on social media — twenty minutes on Facebook could be better used packing the dishwasher before you head out of the house.

Instead of spending the money on high paid social workers and legal systems to take these women's children away and place them in foster care, why can't we use that money for child care, parenting classes, decent housing, job training for single moms.

When both parents work together to determine schools, activities, social calendars and all the other aspects of the child's life, it fosters a cohesive daily experience for the child, no matter whose house they are at on a given day.

Whether that child receives the majority of his or her care at a center or at its house, the biggest factor in deciding what will have the best effect on the child will be those willing to put in the time and effort it takes to properly develop a child's social, physical, and academic skills.
