The impact
of solar storms on Jupiter's aurora was tracked by monitoring the X-rays emitted during two 11 hour observations in October 2011 when an interplanetary coronal mass ejection was predicted to reach the planet from the Sun.
On the basis of magnetic data collected in real time and a chain of suitable numerical models it will eventually prove possible, rather as in conventional meteorology, to forecast space weather and prevent the
impact of solar storms on Earth.
The radio telescope's first major task will be to investigate the Sun to provide earlier
warnings of solar storms that, if left unchecked, could fry satellites and power grids across the globe.
Before STEREO, astrophysicists had no way of tracing the front
of a solar storm as it traveled from the sun to Earth, so they had to guess when a storm would hit.
If scientists are on alert, humanity should have a few days to prepare between the
start of a solar storm and the moment it reaches Earth, Cohen said.
These neutral hydrogen atoms might also signal the
approach of solar storms — gusts in the solar wind that can disrupt satellites, radio communications, and electrical power grids.
With the
cycle of solar storms set to peak in the next three to five years, scientists at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) are searching for ways to gather and analyze information that will enable them to forecast severe solar storms.
Much of the solar storm information that APL scientists seek to analyze comes from the Active Magnetosphere and Planetary Electrodynamics Response Experiment (AMPERE), a $ 4 - million National Science Foundation — funded program that APL initiated in June 2008 along with The Boeing Co. and Iridium Communications to monitor magnetic - field disruptions in Earth's upper atmosphere.
Depending on the prophecy, the world is predestined to expire by
means of a solar storm, asteroid strike, rogue - planet collision, plague, falling stars, earthquake, debt crisis, or some combination thereof.
These same particles, when on Earth, can sometimes have enough energy to interfere with radio communication and electronics, like in the
case of solar storms or coronal mass ejections.
From this viewpoint, the satellites would be able to monitor events on the surface of the Sun several days in
advance of any solar storm activity area before it rotates around to face the Earth.
While MAVEN and a number of other spacecraft watched the fireworks from orbit, NASA's Curiosity rover recorded a more sinister
aspect of the solar storm from the Red Planet's surface.
Four years ago the Kepler Space Telescope discovered an entirely new breed of solar activity — a
class of solar storms known as superflares, that are believed to be on average 10,000 times more powerful than the Carrington Event of 1859.
The project, spearheaded by Madhulika Guhathakurta who compares the mission to Lewis and Clark's famed expedition, gives us a better
understanding of solar storms.
What if that shutdown wasn't some stray flicker related to Chase Bank, but the
result of a solar storm or cyber-attack or some other momentous shock to the system.
A major uncertainty the study authors confronted was assessing the costs of protecting the U.S. grid against the
threat of solar storms that send geomagnetic pulses slamming into vulnerable transformers and other critical grid equipment.
They offered no specific
predictions of solar storms, but they hope to formulate early warnings that will give power companies, satellite operators and others on and around Earth a few days to prepare.
«The White House is requesting $ 47 million in fiscal year 2012 to convert a climate satellite grounded by politics into an observatory to monitor space weather and
warn of solar storms.»
