A significant feature of these molecular probes are that they stable
outside of strong magnetic fields which means they could be easily delivered to the patient in a clinical setting.
The famous sunspots on the surface of the Earth's star result from the
dynamics of strong magnetic fields, and their numbers are an important indicator of the state of activity on the Sun.
Jaubert explains: «When I was looking to see if a similar phenomenon has already been described, I was glad to see that some other research groups around the world obtained the same results experimentally using spin ice made of terbium in the presence
of a strong magnetic field at temperatures close to absolute zero.
The astronomers suggest that the orderly behaviour of the planetary nebulae could have been caused by the presence
of strong magnetic fields as the bulge formed.
On Earth, fusion of light nuclei requires complex devices that make
use of strong magnetic fields to confine and heat plasmas to temperatures in excess of 100 million degrees Celsius such that fusion can occur.
The lab used the light to probe the shift in an ultra-high quality, two - dimensional electron gas supplied by Purdue University physicist Michael Manfra and set in a gallium arsenide quantum well (to contain the particles) under the
influence of a strong magnetic field and low temperature.
Sunspots come in many sizes and shapes and are
locations of strong magnetic fields that extend from below the solar surface through the solar atmosphere into the interplanetary medium.
Although turbulence also exists in the atmosphere and the oceans, the turbulence in Earth's core is different, since it is under the combined influence of Earth's rotation and
of a strong magnetic field.
Until the mid-2000s, the quantum Hall effect and other topological effects had been seen only in the presence
of strong magnetic fields.
