Teaching Methods Courses: The Influence
of Assignments and Activities on
Student Writing
The possible English
teaching methods course path addresses the question
of how to design
assignments and activities that elicit conventional, but not formulaic, writing from
students.
This suggests that the «draw
of home» in new teacher hiring is driven by patterns in
student teaching assignments.
These were: disrupting traditional expectations
of teaching and learning; socializing
students into a school culture signaling the expectations for learners; and using a consistent pedagogical approach in which
students manage complex projects and
assignments, seek feedback, revise work and reflect on what they've learned.
Instead
of spending 33 percent
of their time on administrative tasks such as grading
assignments and reviewing what was already
taught, survey respondents wished they had time to use technology to focus on helping struggling
students, be creative with lesson development, and tailor lessons to
students.
My experience with those who
teach a few years and leave to «guide» the adults is that they didn't want to get involved with the minutia
of teaching (planning lessons, grading papers, breaking down long term
assignments / tasks, adjusting to learning styles, developing caring relationships, dealing with parents, getting to know their
students — you know the real work).
Their work uncovered that turnover and repeated waves
of new teachers create several problems for schools and communities: (1) high turnover schools employ a large number
of novice teachers; (2) turnover creates unstable
teaching assignments; (3) turnover hinders relationships between teachers,
students, and families; and (4) turnover disrupts the social capital needed to support expanded leadership opportunities for teachers.
Moreover, although prior research has also shown that effective secondary writing teachers use patterns in
student work to plan the lessons that follow an
assignment (Newell, 2008), the separation
of methods coursework from field experiences makes it difficult for teacher candidates in secondary English
teaching methods courses to practice using assessment
of student writing to inform their subsequent writing
teaching.
