I did a bit of reading on line and it stated that in North America the orange fleshed are actually a type
of sweet potatoe too (I never knew this), but they are often labelled yams.

Freakily I made something similar about a month ago by accident — generally I make
sweet potatoe and chickpea patties with the same ingredients (omitting squash for
sweet potatoe), but then for some reason completely forgot to mash the chickpeas before putting the rest
of the ingredients in.
