Until these regulations are in place, the group wants a moratorium on the release and commercial
use of synthetic organisms and their products.
The ETC Group, the International Center for Technology Assessment, and Friends of the Earth asked Congress to prohibit the
release of synthetic organisms into the environment and their use in commercial settings.
Senior researcher Dr Louise Kime said: «One of the most exciting developments in biology is the
creation of synthetic organisms that are completely controlled by human - made instructions.
The groups — which include Friends of the Earth, ETC Group, and the International Center for Technology Assessment — call for a moratorium on the commercial use and release
of synthetic organisms until the risks are better understood.
This December 2012 workshop sought to determine the data needs and testing methods for the environmental release of synthetically designed algae and to assess the ecological effects and
risks of synthetic organisms.
