According to the Department for Education, there were 56,735 places allocated to initial teacher training providers (ITT) and school direct lead schools in 2017/18, of which 6,672 were for undergraduate ITT; figures, which continue the increase in the number of aspiring teachers choosing on the job training as their preferred method of a route into teaching.

But even if these reforms were not in place, the work of improving teacher training and support would still pose a key element of any improvement plan for education.

A number of states placed huge bets on professional development, spending enormous sums to train their teachers and school leaders.

This plan, announced in September last year, sought to place Australian students amongst the top five highest performing nations in rigorous international performance tests through a combination of additional, targeted funding using a model mirroring the Gonski proposal, new initiatives in teacher training and accountability, personalised student learning plans, greater school autonomy, and a raft of other Commonwealth initiatives.

Particular emphasis is placed on building internal capacity by training teacher leaders, coaches, and district and school leaders, and by fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
