of new entrants that completed their

of 2016.
An analysis
of the size
of the training pool as identified by the Department for Education (DfE) in their annual Initial
Teacher Training census suggests that
vacancies are eroding the pool fastest in some small subject areas, such as social studies and business studies.
Last year, the subject recruited only 48 per cent
of the number
of teachers DfE calculated it would need to fill
vacancies in school.
Data from a quarter
of the UK's schools, shows there will be almost 14,000
teacher vacancies as the school year begins.
Other sources
of teachers to fill January
vacancies include, «returners» to teaching; existing
teachers seeking to change schools — perhaps because a partner has been relocated — and overseas
teachers.
It follows that many
