To further examine the tiny contents
of the amber specimens, a team of researchers based out of Spain and the US used a couple of methods of zooming in to see what was inside.
Modern relatives
of the amber specimen are commonly found in North America today, especially in the Appalachians, but P. hispaniolae — and all salamanders — have long been extinct in the Caribbean, the researchers explain.
Not exact matches
The study's first author Lida Xing from the China University
of Geosciences in Beijing discovered the remarkable
specimen at an
amber market in Myitkyina, Myanmar in 2015.
The
amber piece was originally seen as some kind
of plant inclusion and destined to become a curiosity or piece
of jewellery, but Xing recognized its potential scientific importance and suggested the Dexu Institute
of Palaeontology buy the
specimen.

Amber Museum in Tengchong City, China, after he had heard about an
amber sample with a strange «lizard claw» inclusion.
