In my last essay at First Things, I echoed the words of Pope Benedict writing about the pastoral care
of the homosexual person by saying, «only what is true can ultimately be pastoral.»

Joseph Bayly, a widely read evangelical author, confesses honestly: «For years I have been troubled
by a strict application
of the Bible's strong condemnation
of homosexuality, and total judgment
of the
homosexual person....
The other book (Who Walk Alone,
by Margaret Evening, 1974) speaks
of the gifts, sensitivity and loving natures characterizing many
homosexual persons and includes this statement:
The statement called for understanding, forgiveness and spiritual support
of homosexual persons; expressed opposition to «the unjust and unkind treatment given to
homosexuals by individuals, society and the church»; and pledged to minister to
homosexuals and «to help them to change their life style in a manner which brings glory to God.»
For some
homosexual persons, the effort to change can mean years
of individual and group therapy, agonized prayers, suicidal depressions, and the constant fear
of detection, loss
of job and attack
by straight men.
Married
people and parents, almost all
of them
by now survivors
of the sexual revolution, weren't asking for the task force's kind
of help, and
homosexuals will not be assisted
by the church's lying about Scripture.
It is interesting to note that National Statistics, reported
by The Daily Telegraph, not long after the debate indicated that
homosexual persons make up 1.5 \ %
of the United Kingdom population; a figure consistent with Academic research over twenty five years.
The most negative statement
by Paul regarding same - sex acts occurs in Romans 1:24 - 27 where, in the context
of a larger argument on the need
of all
people for the gospel
of Jesus Christ, certain
homosexual behavior is given as an example
of the «uncleanness»
of idolatrous Gentiles.
Though I am encouraged that Hill sees potential hazards in the use
of terms like «gay Christian» and «
homosexual Christian,» he, along with Gonnerman and Tushnet, may not sufficiently recognize the problems with describing or defining a
person in terms
of his or her affective desire for the same sex (whether that desire is relational, romantic, or sexual), in place
of the clear definition
of our sexual identity revealed to us
by Scripture and the Church.
It was, in fact, the independent realisation (confirmed
by scholarship), when doing a word search on «Sodom», that Sodom is incorrectly used to condemn homosexuality which led me to question the treatment
of homosexual people.
However, the recent letter on pastoral care
of homosexuals (already referred to), as well as the demand
by the Vatican that ethicist Charles Curran retract his position on homosexuality and other sexual moral issues, or relinquish his position as a Catholic theologian, and its more recent order to me that I give up all ministry to
homosexual persons, have convinced me that I can no longer in conscience remain silent.
But this 1990 study was actually based on a sample that was apparently distorted
by volunteer bias and hence not representative
of homosexual persons in general.
Averaging about one page each, the case studies were collected
by the author outside his clinical practice and with the cooperation
of the Daughters
of Bilitis, an organization
of female
homosexual persons.
While psychiatrists will,
of course, be available to help
people with a
homosexual orientation if they want such help, the APA's decision is a clear disclaimer
of responsibility for changing
homosexual persons who are not troubled
by their orientation and whose behavior is not socially irresponsible.
A more recent 1990 survey
of more than 10,000
persons by the National Center for Health Statistics indicates that
homosexuals and bisexuals combined amount to approximately 1.5 percent
of the population.
Although the connection is subtle, the intensity
of fear or hatred
of homosexual persons may be linked to the fear that anyone could be overcome
by their own unbridled passions.
I have personally witnessed much less than kindness toward
persons like myself who are
of the
homosexual orientation
by many well meaning (and not so well meaning)
persons of faith, and the results have been disastrous.
Church leaders are accused
of fostering psychological violence against
homosexual people by repeating certain myths or ignoring the important issues responsible for many problems that gay and lesbian
people experience, both in churches and the wider society.
In February
of 1994, in what was its March issue, First Things published a statement on the
homosexual movement signed
by twenty - one
people,
of whom I was one.
The decision to declassify homosexuality was accompanied
by the passage
of an APA Position Statement, which supported the protection
of the civil rights
of homosexual persons.
In the end
people don't alter their opinions about
homosexuals through argument, but
by meeting and learning about the lives
of gay
people.
Here's another, scarcely less oratorical in character, from the Congregation for the Doctrine
of the Faith: the title
of this document (another wonderful example
of Vatican bogus academic language when what is needed is a competent journalist used to writing informative headlines) is «Considerations regarding proposals to give legal recognition to unions between
homosexual persons» (2003): The Church's teaching on marriage and on the complementarity
of the sexes reiterates a truth that is evident to right reason and recognised as such
by all the major cultures
of the world.
First, it fails to mention that the Church «refuses to consider the
person as a «heterosexual» or a «
homosexual» and insists that every person has a fundamental identity: the creature of God and, by grace, his child and heir to eternal life» (Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, On the Pastoral Care of Homosexual Persons, para.

A great many
people still feel an «instinctive repugnance» towards
homosexual intercourse but the rights
of individuals who form minority groups or who have special needs can not be decided
by the simple preferences
of the majority.
Other biological components
of homosexual behaviour have also been found: brain structures that differ with sexual orientation, for example, and robust theories for how genes survive in the population despite rarely being passed on
by homosexual people.
Not only can you search
people by location and sex, but you can also avail
of dating options such as bisexual,
homosexual, straight and interracial dating.
Very «democratic»
of you to compare
people who question some VERY questionable science with loons who deny that the extermination
of Jews,
homosexuals and other
people deemed «undesirable»
by the Nazis ever occurred.
Recent examples
of our work in discrimination law include suing an immigration detention centre for racial discrimination, challenging the police for stopping and searching
people based on race, challenging discriminatory bail conditions applied to
people wrongly arrested during the London riots, failing to protect a
homosexual prisoner from assault
by homophobic inmates and persuading a school to apologise and train relevant staff after it excluded a pupil with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.
