Two
of the mill dogs — Sunny and Lucy — made her way into our home to be fostered until their forever homes could be found.
Seeing as many cities have taken measures to ban the sale
of mill dogs — and even helped get rescued dogs from shelters into pet shops instead — there is no reason for this industry to continue.

These efforts have ranged from coordinating the rescue effort, to lining up animal care professionals and rescue organizations to take puppy mill dogs, to providing supplemental funding for the veterinary care
of mill dogs that have already been rescued.
In October 2010, TPMP, along with Iowa Voters for Companion Animals (IVCA), hosted a conference in Chicago and invited other grassroots animal welfare organizations with a shared mission of ending puppy mills and the inhumane treatment
of mill dogs.

Many
of the mill dogs we rescue are about to be euthanized because they are no longer considered «profitable» by the puppy mill — a 7 - month old puppy is too old to sell at a pet store; a 9 - year old female is no longer producing large enough litters; or there are health issues that would cost money to treat.
Many
of the mill dogs spend their entire lives in a wire cage.
Most
of these mill dogs do not know the true joys of being a dog as they have lived in cages their entire lives.
For the majority
of mill dogs, accepting a treat right out of your hand is a huge show of trust.
We hope our continued campaigns will help raise awareness about the plight
of milled dogs and cats and continue to shut down pet stores supplied by them.
Great question Linda Robbins... unfortunately, there's a lot of death... the local shelters will do their assessments on the dogs they see «fit», and if they fail these aggression tests, they will be euthanized... Most
of these mill dogs have been out of a tiny cage, never felt grass therefore, they can not walk and the humane society sees that as grounds to be «put down»....
Whether it is facilitating the rescue
of mill dogs or the closing of a pet store that we have continually protested, or having an ordinance passed that we worked on for over two years, these are the gifts we get.

dog mills exist because there is demand for puppy trade — some disreputable pet stores get their supplies
of young puppies directly from them.
If your breeder can not prove to you that his or her
dog has competed in
dog shows, or that he or she seems like just a run -
of - the -
mill amateur home breeder, or someone who is just waiting for you to part with your wallet, then do not proceed further.
The breeder
of the now defunct
dog mill had tried to sell off the
dogs, most
of which were sick and emaciated, to other breeders in an effort to recoup his losses.
But sadly, each year rescue groups take in many
of these charming little
dogs — some because they have been overbred in puppy
mills, some because owners failed to do their homework or made an impulse purchase.
Puppy
mills refer to high volume puppy producing facilities in which the
dogs are generally transferred to their new owners off the producers» property, so that the facility operates out
of view.
She said, «For example, one
of the
dogs in this transfer was released to us by the courts following a puppy
mill bust.
Because
of how
dogs sold through pet stores and / or born in puppy
mills are bred, housed, handled, shipped, homed, and raised, there are many possible reasons underlying the problems they show as adults.
Oklahoma is one
of the highest in the number
of Class B dealers licensees in the nation (34 out
of 969 active Class B licensees are located in OK) and this trade in
dogs and other animals, which go to research, product testing, resale for pets and animals used in exhibits, may be even more hidden than in the puppy
mill world.
Referring to this event Nolan said, «These are certainly not the worst
dogs we've seen by any means, but I wish people could see what it's like when these
dogs come out
of the
mills.
