This workshop helps participants with the practical knowledge of not only how to take care
of their aging parent physically but also deal with the myriad of emotional issues that are present.

One
of the most difficult experiences
of mid-years couples is the reversal
of roles, as
aging parents become increasingly dependent on them — emotionally, if not
physically.
Murray Straus's studies suggest that marital violence occurs in one out
of four marriages, not as a single event but as a pattern (Richard J. Gelles and Claire Pedrick Cornell, Intimate Violence in Families [Sage Publications, 1985], p. 69) The Center for the Prevention
of Sexual and Domestic Violence estimates that one girl out
of three and one boy out
of seven are sexually abused by
age 18, and that in half the cases their abusers are family members; that 1 million children are
physically abused by
parents or caretakers every year; and that 1 million elderly people are abused every year by their adult children.
As a consultant to
parents of children
of all
ages, from newborn through adolescence, her ability to communicate and empathize has helped many families to raise
physically and emotionally healthy children.

parent we all know how important it is for our children to be
physically active but did you know that such habits could be set by the
age of 5?

There are few research or intervention programs designed to identify and address the specific needs
of sandwiched individuals like myself to help them cope better.2 We know that members
of the sandwiched generation (who care for young children and
aging parents) often face burnout in their marriages, 2 which is feeling emotionally,
physically, and mentally exhausted about the relationship.3 One group
of researchers found that sandwiched couples who withdraw socially (e.g., pull away from friends) tend to have the worst well - being compared to those who do not withdraw.4 Although sandwiched women typically reduce the their work hours (or quit their jobs altogether) more than men in order to cope with stress, 5 I have never had that luxury due to always being the sole breadwinner.
Increasingly, adult children are sandwiched between the demands
of caring for their own children and their
aging parents, who may need more assistance as they get older and
physically weaker.
