Contrary to the orthodox view that the Resurrection inevitably led to Christ's ascension to transcendent glory, Altizer's radical interpretation

Part
of the confusion
of Cobb's position stems
from the fact that the extensive
continuum, conceived
of as a set
of relations underlying past, present, and future, is part actual and part potential — actual in as far as it is constituted by actual entities enjoying actual relationships legislating what are real potentialities governing the relationships
of future occasions; and merely potential in so far as these relationships are viewed as factors determining what forms
of definiteness are, and are not, possible as factors in future fact.

These relative entities have evolved in a cosmic totality which is our serial Universe; they represent a process
of coming to be in which the composite is built up on the simple; and the process is a
continuum; it progresses on and on,
from the particles
of matter to the most complex synthesis
of elements,
from these to life,
from life to the anthropoids.
From astronomy and geology at one end

We can say that, as primordial, God is the
continuum of all possibilities, the treasure - house
of potentiality to be applied to the creation; that, as consequent (or as affected by that creation), God is the recipient
of all value
of good achieved in the creative advance; and that, as superjective, God «pours back into the world» (as Whitehead once put it) that which has thus been received
from it but is now harmonized within the divine life that is «the Harmony
of harmonies.»
The question, however, is that

from the standpoint
of a given actual entity, any other portion

[T] he point
of the definition [
of straight lines by the method
of extensive abstraction] is to demonstrate that the extensive
continuum, apart
from the particular actualities into which it is atomized, includes in its systematic structure the relationships
of regions expressed by straight lines.
Whitehead offers an alternative formulation and claims on behalf
of his formulation that it can account for all experimental results accounted for by the Einsteinian formulation but that it represents a different interpretation
of these results in terms
of a more adequate concept
of nature (PNK vi; CN vii, 182; IS 125 - 35).18 The major theoretical difference between the two formulations is that whereas in the Einsteinian formulation the metric structure
of the space - time
continuum is variable
from point to point and in differing directions (that is, heterogeneous and nonisotropic), in the Whiteheadian formulation the metric structure
of the space - time
continuum is uniform
from point to point and in differing directions (that is, homogeneous and isotropic).
In light
of the definition
of «a straight line,» however, this would mean that in diverse regions
of the space - time
continuum under consideration the measuring rod, under prevailing standard conditions or the introduction
of correction factors, is not deformed in its length as it is moved
from point to point or in differing directions in the space - time
continuum.
Select a measuring rod and construct a second measuring rod
of a material differing
from the first but otherwise identical; place the two rods together so that their endpoints coincide; and move the pair
of rods about in the space - time
continuum.
Now, if measurement can be significant only if the measuring rod is free
of all deforming influences, not simply those attributed to the influence
of «differential» forces, then given a space - time
continuum of variable metric structure, no set
of conditions can be specified to ensure that the measuring rod does not undergo deformation in its length as it is transported
from point to point during the process
of measurement.
In summary, extending Whitehead's doctrine
of eternal objects to include the idea that they form a dense
continuum seems to raise at least two problems: (1) it requires that God consciously prehend a nondenumerable multitude
of propositions regarding every past actual occasion and (2) it requires either that a new concrescence choose its subjective aim
from a nondenumerable multitude
of alternatives or that this multitude somehow be restricted before all these alternatives are prehended by the occasion.
Now, Whitehead considers the extensive
continuum as «real» «because it expresses a fact derived
from the actual world and concerning the contemporary actual world... It is the reality
of what is potential, in its character
of a real component
of what is actual» (PR 66/103).
... the objectified contemporaries are only directly relevant to the subject in their character
of arising
from a datum which is an extensive
continuum.
This concept is intended to provide a passage
from presentational immediacy to causal efficacy whereby extensive
continuum can be conceived also as a principle
of real external relations.
I should note too that it seems that Creel agrees on this point, for he states that «it is logically impossible for anyone to know as discrete all possible individuals that can possibly be excised
from a
continuum... hence, an exhaustively infinite set
of individuals could not have been known by now or ever, even in the mind
of God» (PS 12:217 f.).

The only thing basic to sensation apart
from its feeling - element is the respect in which it involves a sense
