The authors are members of the Saltmarsh Habitat & Avian Research Program, a collaboration of academic, government, and nonprofit researchers focused on the conservation
of tidal marsh birds.

The expansive coastscape
of salt
marsh,
tidal creeks, and upland woods also fills a crucial gap in a mosaic
of more than 8,000 protected acres within the Great
Marsh, which extends from Gloucester to the New Hampshire Seacoast.
These environments, along with other forms
of coastal ecosystems such as
tidal marshes and sea grasses, have been given the name «blue carbon» to differentiate them from the «green» carbon
of other forests, where carbon is absorbed above ground in trees.
The world's coastal ecosystems — areas such as
tidal marshes and mangrove forests — have the potential to store and sequester large amounts
of carbon, collectively known as blue carbon.
Recent research suggests that healthy, intact coastal wetland ecosystems such as mangrove forests,
tidal marshes and seagrass meadows are particularly good at drawing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and storing it for hundreds to thousands
of years.
This result is particularly relevant given the threats that saltmarsh nesting birds currently face,» says Chris Elphick
of the University
of Connecticut, an expert on
tidal marsh birds who was not involved with the study.
Throughout the experiment, they measured the effects
of each species mix on three important salt
marsh functions: overall grass growth (productivity); the rate
of dead plant removal (decomposition); and how fast
tidal or storm surge water percolated through the
marsh (filtration).

Of the coastal blue carbon stored within mangroves,
tidal marshes, and seagrass meadows, 50 — 99 % is located in the soils below ground.
Tidal marshes are being lost at a rate
of 1 - 2 % per year.
The coastal ecosystems
of mangroves, seagrass meadows and
tidal marshes mitigate climate change by sequestering carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere and oceans at significantly higher rates, per unit area, than terrestrial forests (Figure 1).
Mangroves,

marshes, and seagrasses sequester and store significant amounts
of coastal blue carbon from the atmosphere and ocean and are now recognized for their role in mitigating climate change.

Coastal wetlands, such as mangroves,
tidal flats and salt
marshes, along with seagrass beds sequester large amounts
of carbon within their plants and especially in the soil.
This scenic land contains more than half a mile
of shoreline along two significant wetlands — the
tidal marsh in Vanderburgh Cove and a globally rare
tidal swamp — as well as Fallsburg Creek, a Hudson River tributary.

tidal marshes that have been degraded by poorly planned roadways and rail lines.

When mangroves, seagrasses or
tidal marshes are destroyed, they not only lose their capacity to absorb carbon from the atmosphere, but also emit carbon that is estimated to have accumulated over thousands
of years.
And about reestablishment
of fringe
marshes, unblocking
tidal creeks and what the rest
of coastal USA is doing about all this.
And through the use
of hydraulic rotary cutter head pipeline dredges and Rolligon amphibious ditcher - spreaders, use, instead, these navigation channel dredge spoils to reconstruct the fringe
marshes and
tidal creeks
of the Chesapeake Bay watershed.

of loam (sandy loam, silt loam), sand, adobe, riverwash,
