Following my last pregnancy, I made a list
of the ultimate things to do before the baby arrives and everything changes (original list here).
But before you worry about which wallpaper for the nursery, the following is a list
of ultimate things an expectant mother should do before she delivers:
On the one hand, we must enter into history with all the seriousness
of the ultimate things.
Not exact matches
The good news is that the opportunities in the stores are so additive and important (from an experience, repeated trial, and data standpoint) to Amazon's ever - increasing accumulation
of behavioral information and
ultimate objective
of knowing everything about us that I think Amazon will leave
things alone for a while.
Sometimes the most creative aspect
of an idea — and the key to its
ultimate success — isn't how radically different it is from the way we've always done
things, but how much it's the same.
There's a kind
of ultimate Socratic
thing: Who am I?
A third approach would be to understand
ultimate responsibility in terms
of motivation: when you know that you're going to be held responsible if
things go badly, then presumably you're going to work hard to make sure that
things go well.

of prosecutorial will and resources, and ultimately a tremendous amount
of a court's energy, to see the
thing through to its
ultimate outcome.

Thomas thinks that it is the discipline
of metaphysics that asks questions about the
ultimate cause
of existence
of things, and, as he says, «not only does faith hold that there is creation, reason also demonstrates it» (In II Sent., dist.
I'm not looking to the
things of this world to be my
ultimate satisfaction.»
It is here, where the moral bonds
of voluntary attachment have not yet been stretched beyond the breaking point, that true moral discourse can be maintained, especially, as Michael W. McConnell says, «over the highest
things - matters
of ultimate truth and value.»
Your worldview, where science is the
ultimate and only arbiter
of all
things, is altogether too restrictive.
Stealing cars at 13, in and out
of jail in his teens, killed his first person when he was 17 and got away with it, used and sold drugs to kids, killed an entire family just for fun, and then we'll say that was the last
thing before he headed off to his
ultimate plan.
I was «a person who held that the existence
of the
ultimate cause, as God, and the essential nature
of things are unknown and unknowable, or that human knowledge is limited to experience.»
We tend to see death as the
ultimate evil
thing that can happen and any death as the failure
of God to preserve life.
Yet what if the

things is redemption and eternal life?

of these
things — not succeeding financially represents is that people are spending their money in other ways.
But now for Christians Jesus Christ appears not only as the symbol
of an ethos in which the
ultimate response to the inscrutable power in all
things is one
of trust.

of all perfections, even natural perfections, is the necessary basis for that mystical and
ultimate organism which you are constructing out
of all
things.
It is the vision
of something which stands beyond, behind and within, the passing flux
of immediate
things; something which is real, and yet waiting to be realized; something which is a remote possibility, and yet the greatest
of present facts; something that gives meaning to all that passes, and yet eludes apprehension; something whose possession is the final good, and yet is beyond all reach; something which is the
ultimate ideal, and the hopeless quest.
In analyzing the category
of the
ultimate, with its basic rhythm
of the one and the many, Whitehead can only finally conclude: «It lies in the nature
of things that the many enter into complex unity» (PR 211 31).
In this completely social philosophy (conflict, which is not denied, being also a social relation) God is that in the cosmos whereby it is a cosmos; he is the individual case on the cosmic scale
of all the
ultimate categories (including those
of social feeling, «subjective aim,» etc.) thanks to which these categories describe a community
of things, and not merely
things each enclosed in unutterable privacy, irrelevant to and unordered with respect to anything else.
In contrast, Caldecott states in the first line
of his preface: «The book is about Tolkien's spirituality, by which I mean his religious awareness and experience, the
things he believed about life and death and
ultimate truth» (p xi).
In consequence one is the less disposed to reject as unscientific the idea that the critical point
of planetary Reflection, the fruit
of socialization, far from being a mere spark in the darkness, represents our passage, by Translation or dematerialization, to another sphere
of the Universe: not an ending
of the ultra-human but its accession to some sort
of trans - humanity at the
ultimate heart
of things.
For example, there are persons to whom it is wholly self - evident that sense data are the
ultimate givens in terms
of which all thought develops and who are equally convinced that the only acceptable explanation
of the way
things happen follows mechanical models.
Human love can be transformed into the celebration
of the
ultimate love which embraces all
things.
To exalt them, including the most purely «religious» intuitions, to some kind
of absolute status, or, which is to do the same
thing, to assume that they are the means
of access to the
ultimate, is to be involved in ideology.
In the traditional view
of God's eternity as timelessness, enormous difficulty is created in explaining how essentially temporal
things like the world and the body can participate in God's timelessness without their
ultimate destruction.
a person who holds that the existence
of the
ultimate cause, as God, and the essential nature
of things are unknown and unknowable, or that human knowledge is limited to experience.
After all, if complicated
things need a creator, then your super being must be the
ultimate example
of it.
In this way the ontological argument, by drawing out the presupposition
of metaphysical understanding, indicates that the choice before us is between holding that there is a God and that «reality» makes sense in some metaphysical manner, whether or not we can ever grasp what that sense is, and holding that there is no God and that any apparent metaphysical understanding
of reality can only be an illusion which does not significantly correspond to the
ultimate nature
of things — unless this «nihilism» be regarded as a kind
of metaphysical understanding instead
of its blank negation.
Early on, having admitted the difficulty
of speaking
of ultimate mystery at all, he adds, «This does not mean that it is not worth saying, that it is just empty talk... I do have some
things to say, but... I want it understood from the outset how problematic all
of this is, how uncertain; but however uncertain, these are matters worth attending to, worth trying to understand as well as we can.»
If Jesus is drawing all people to himself, if judgement is about putting all
things right, if Gods goal is the reconciliation
of all creation then whatever judgement and punishment happens to seek to achieve this end, how can we say love never fails, if in this
ultimate instance, it does, by leaving anyone lost for all eternity?.
In taking this sixth step, Christians affirm that the «tendency toward the human and the humane (toward «Christ») in the
ultimate nature
of things» which has existed since the beginning
of time «has become evident and clear only now in the new order
of relationships just coming into view» in the Christian community To be sure, «any community which becomes a vehicle in history
of more profoundly humane patterns
of life» can be a part
of this new order, but the events around Jesus have at least a kind
of priority as its first clear manifestation.
the truth
of God can be or has been captured in the ex-cathedra utterances
of the bishop
of Rome — the idolatry
of many who like to pretend that
ultimate truth has been captured in the ecumenical councils
of the early church, in the historic creeds, or in the «unbroken tradition
of the catholic faith,» which usually is the same
thing as the speaker's special prejudice.
The fourth step goes a bit further, to see «the trajectory eventuating in the creation
of human historical existence» not «as a metaphysical surd but rather as grounded in the
ultimate nature
of things, in the
ultimate mystery.»
Fifth, Christians choose to use «God» as the symbol for the
ultimate mystery
of this creative process, so that «life must at all points be lived in awe and respect before the
ultimate mystery
of things.
Conservatives, despite their substantive disagreements about the
ultimate nature
of things, have resisted liberal and radical calls for «transparency» in social life precisely because they understand that society can not withstand a too systematic or energetic analysis
of its sometimes fragile foundations.
Civil religion portrays a divine order
of things, giving us a sense
of worth and direction in relation to
ultimate purposes.
The answer, I think, is found in the education
of these people, their revulsion with imperial order, and the event
of the Great Awakening where the American colonials concurred with Lebniz's comment, «The
ultimate reason for
things is called God.»
From the poor [we] receive in a way hardly expected new eyes for seeing the
ultimate truth
of things and new energies for exploring unknown and dangerous paths.
Too many
of us religious people are complacent with the absolute knowledge that theirs is not just right, but the
ultimate, the only and that researching any
thing differenet is a useless pursuit.
Life born accidentally from the dust, no
ultimate meaning or purpose in it, and no destiny ahead
of it except annihilation — that on one side; and on the other what Benjamin Franklin called «Powerful Goodness» at the heart
of things!
And there are those on the other side, the believers in some
ultimate value in the tangible evolution
of things.
To have experienced and understood, in order to teach others to experience and understand, that all human enrichment is but dross except inasmuch as it becomes the most precious and incorruptible
of all
things by adding itself to an immortal centre
of love: such is the supreme knowledge and the
ultimate lesson to be imparted by the Christian educator.
