Qualcomm has announced its next generation
of ultrasonic fingerprint sensors during Mobile World Congress Shanghai.
Apple might just show the world how to do it in their upcoming iPhone 8, but assuming that Apple didn't just find the holy grail
of ultrasonic fingerprint sensors and make fingerprint sensors under the display work as fast as conventional ones, are you prepared to sacrifice unlock speed, or would you rather have a faster conventional fingerprint sensor on the back?

In July, Qualcomm and Vivo teamed up to demo an
ultrasonic in - display
fingerprint sensor on a prototype Vivo smartphone, the first
of its kind.

of a user's
fingerprint to unlock the device.
To make sure they won't miss out on the rise and prevalence
of either biometric technique, a number
of Chinese smartphone manufacturers are reportedly planning to adopt 3D
sensors domestically while pushing screen - embedded
ultrasonic fingerprint scanners internationally.
At MWC 2017, the US - based chipmaker announced the next generation
ultrasonic fingerprint scanners with the introduction of Qualcomm Fingerpri

It is not yet mentioned how the technology exactly works but we can get an idea from the Samsung patent where they used 12 pressure point
sensors sandwiched between cover glass and display panel where the scanner passes
ultrasonic signals through an OLED to read the contours
of a
fingerprint without making direct contact.
The
sensor, as it turns out, is the latest
ultrasonic fingerprint sensor from Qualcomm that now works through OLED display stacks up to 1.2 mm thick, up to 0.8 mm
of cover glass, or up to 0.65 mm
of aluminum (an increase from 0.4 mm for both glass or metal).

It's also interesting to note that a
fingerprint sensor can be spotted on the back panel
of these new renders, which contradicts earlier prototype images
of a non-curved display P10, which allegedly houses an
ultrasonic fingerprint scanner just beneath the display.
