of the urease and stomach acid is toxic to epithelial cells as are the other chemicals produced by this bacterium, leading to damage to cells, a disruption of tight junctions and inflammation.
Once inside the bacterial cell, nickel regulates the synthesis
of urease, which in turn neutralizes the acid from the stomach.
