The disadvantages of multi-valve engines are an increase in manufacturing cost and a potential increase in oil consumption due to the greater number
of valve stem seals.
There are some puddles of oil around a few of the valves, so I expect
some of the valve stem seals to be shot, but would that alone explain the all - round blackness of everything in this valvetrain?

If oil is on the «inside part»
of the plug, then the problem is likely a head gasket,
valve stem seals, or worn rings.
They said they could see a tiny bit
of exhaust smoke and then subsequently tried telling me because
of the age

valve stem seals.
All

They then sold me a bottle

As the oil smoke is coming out
of the exhaust, that suggests to me that the oil is getting into the cylinders - the most likely causes for this are a blown headgasket, failed
valve stem seals, or failed piston rings.
First
of all, check if the engine is burning oil: piston ring failures have resulted in scratched bores; others have blown
valve -
stem seals, so look for blue smoke on the overrun and oil specks on the tailgate on higher milers (110,000 - plus).
As a rule, the problems
of high oil consumption on N62 appear when mileage reaches about 50,000 — 60,000 miles (100,000 km), and the reason is the
valve stem seals.
Otherwise it can lead to malfunctions in
valve stem seals and later pistons rings can also go out
of order.
