of this innovative technology are that it (1) learns more and more about the stability
of the patient's glaucoma with every measurement
of eye pressure or
visual field, (2) can be personalized to identify the optimal frequency
of testing for each individual patient, and (3) would suggest an eye pressure level specific for that particular patient that the care provider would use in the process
of recommending treatment.
Of course,
visual field testing, looking at the optic nerve, optic nerve atrophy, nerve fiber layer thinning, using optical coherence tomography, but the real question is can we back that up significantly and be able to tell whether the patient sitting right there in the chair is in trouble?
We have some biomarkers for glaucoma that tell us whether patients have the disease, like
visual field tests or imaging, just letting your doctor look at the optic nerve in the back
of the eye is a biomarker for whether you have glaucoma and, at least at a gross level, whether it's getting worse.
Our new
visual field test that helps detect the earliest signs
of glaucoma is already showing some hints
of positive effects.
The findings also underlined the need for glaucoma patients to have regular
visual field tests after the age
of 55.
