Our letter that appeared in the February 14th issue
of Science Magazine was motivated by our concerns about the widespread news reports, opinion
pieces, and blog postings linking this winter's cold
weather over the central and eastern U.S. to global
warming.
For me the most convincing
piece of evidence that global
warming has been contributing already to more and more intense
weather related natural catastrophes is the fact that while we find a steep increase in the number
of loss relevant
weather events (about tripling in the last 30 years) we only find a slight increase in geophysical (earthquake, volcano, tsunami) events, which should not be affected by global
warming.
One hypothesis is that a
warmer Arctic makes
weather systems more sluggish, which encourages the build up
of cold domes that end up as Arctic outbreaks, but that's just a climate -
weather connection, so we should be skeptical, I guess, based on this
piece.
