Here a funereal lament sung in four languages accompanied slowly shifting
patterns of white marks on midnight blue grounds presented on four monitors recessed in the wall.
Color is actually governed by several sets of genes, some that produce the color itself, others that influence intensity, pattern, amount and
distribution of white markings, or distribution of pigment on individual hairs.
To a small extent the
shape of a white marking may be influenced by chance or environment (cloned animals of other species that have white markings will vary slightly even though they are essentially identical twins).
But there are over 30 breeds of livestock guardian dogs, & most of them come in many other colors, including white but also black, black & tan, brindle, sable, agouti, particolor, ticked, gray, fawn, red, blue, liver, etc., & can be any of these with any varying
degrees of white markings or no white at all.
Swedish Norwegian Finnish and American Champion Bahlambs Prospect Shaggy Boy is a dog with
plenty of white markings; all white head with large white collar down to shoulder blades and elbows and by many considered too flashy in marking.
When two merles are bred together, breeders commonly cull puppies displaying
amounts of white markings deemed «excessive» by the breed standards.

White Aussies are rare today because we have been slowly eliminating the «more white»
forms of the white marking genes from our gene pool by not breeding Aussies with more than allowable white (though the preference for white trim on the show dogs does have some pushing the envelope.)
Appearance The island spotted skunk can be identified by its complex
pattern of white markings on a blackbackground consisting of four to six broken white stripes, a triangular white forehead patch, a series of shorter white stripes resembling spots, and white on part of the abdominal surface and tip of the tail.
