Most years, we mention justice, liberty and the pursuit
of happiness when the fireworks
paint red,
white and blue across the evening sky and the ice cream is
finally ready to eat.
And
finally, with a little bit
of white fabric
paint,
paint little dots for stars around your shirt and add some star trails.
By the time she
paints her face
white, having announced that England is her only husband and
finally taking to the screen in full Queenly regalia, she's made us understand from exactly what sacrifices that sort
of iconic self - confidence came.
One
of the earliest on view is the freely
painted «Ex-Nihilo» (1958), still grounded in Abstract Expressionism, in which an amorphous center
of blues, yellows, pinks and violets is irregularly rimmed in turn by
white, scalloped black,
white and
finally a tipsy surround
of gray.
They include a small
painting simply titled «# 1» (2000), in which we see a phallic armature moving from gray into light blue; another titled «# 2» (1995), in which a blue crescent bends around to become titanium
white; a third, «# 4» (2000 — 1), in which a rising, two - pronged black organic shape ends in a touch
of green and ultramarine at either end; and
finally «# 5» (1991), in which a red finger - like form passes from black to crimson red.
You started out with a series
of monochromatic portraits
of soldiers, either in red or in black, followed by a series
of predominantly black
paintings concerned with public war monuments and symbols
of power, followed by a series
of abstract
white paintings and
finally the gray abstract
paintings.
Finally some
of the curved shapes created by these intersections are filled in with
white paint.
The exhibition allies a range
of highly varied works; Reza Aramesh's critical reconfiguration
of postures
of oppression taken from the documentary photographic record
of the late 20th century within the context
of high - cultural legacy
of the Enlightenment, Jake & Dinos Chapman's attack
of those same Enlightenment spawned delusions
of cultural progress, Desiree Dolron's exquisite, dense, almost painterly rendering
of light and shadow within the photographic medium, Terence Koh's
white - on -
white neon declaration
of Eternal Love, Wayne Horse's lighter - lit display
of sub-cultural, cul - de-sacs articulated in a trash aesthetic, Dawn Mellor's radical portraits
of female film stars, re-contextualized from the objectifying gaze
of cinematic light into the critical, imaginative space afforded by
painting, Gino Saccone's loose but formal play
of material, surface and light in his multi-media, sculptural assemblages, Peter Schuyff's abstract, shaded path from ambient light into a dark portal and
finally Conrad Shawcross» beautiful and austere kinetic work that emanates an ever shifting pattern in shadow and light.
Three smaller side - chapel - like galleries are devoted to a progression
of artists with Minimalist leanings: the colored steles
of Anne Truitt, the slathered process
paintings of Ms. Heilmann and
finally a series
of big, stuttering black inkjet X's on
white linen by Wade Guyton that pledge allegiance to
painting while crossing their fingers behind their backs.
Finally she marks along the crayon lines with a palette knife, scraping off patches
of the
white paint.
After
painting a billion coats
of white paint on the canvas I
finally had a clean slate for my quote art.
I
finally painted all our pink - tiled bath walls the SAME pink as the tile when I realized it was the contrast
of white wall against pink tile that bothered me most.
After rubbing in a coat
of Annie Sloan's
white furniture wax over the
paint, my table was all ready to go —
FINALLY!
They
painted the wood floor
white and gave it soft blue / gray stripes... I think I'm going to do the same in my bedroom when I
finally get the carpet pulled up — except probably just do a
white wash to let the grain
of the wood show through.

finally this past month I got around to
painting my kitchen cabinets
white which made the biggest difference since there isn't a lot
of natural light in this space.
So, about 18 months later — along with 2 contractors, 4 historical committee meetings, 5 slabs
of calacatta marble, 15 samples

white»
paint, 1 tetanus shot and an endless amount
of wine, our «labor
of love» was
finally completed.
I
finally found a color and asked the
paint store to add a few drops
of white and there was my crisp mint green.
We've tested, tried and sampled literally dozens
of white paints and today we're
finally sharing our winners!
