and their parents as they attempt to navigate the many ways the internet has changed their relationships, their communication, their self - image,

children and the breakup
of their marriage immediately
following.
For those unfamiliar, the show
follows the Pfeffermans: Maura, née Mort, a former Los Angeles pater familias (the great Jeffrey Tambor, who just picked up his second consecutive Emmy for the role) who, after 20 years
of secrecy, has decided to openly live her life as a
woman; Maura's ex-wife;
and her three adult
children, who are all working through their own sex -, gender -,
and identity - related questions as well.
The drama plausibly suggests that Mary was a fiercely intelligent, resourceful
woman who rejected the male norms
of marriage
and children laid down for her,
and insisted on
following Jesus.
Robert Altman's unloved mood piece, Images, his middle -
child in a triptych
of eerie, unsettling films focused intensely
and enigmatically on the female psyche (
following the exceptional The Cold Day in the Park in 1969
and preceding lauded masterpiece 3
Women in 1977), at last gets the loving restoration it deserves thanks to Arrow Academy.
Ideally, major artists avoid or subvert trends instead
of following them,
and there's nothing in Ratcatcher's poetic,
child's - eye view
of a suburban garbage strike or Morvern Callar's deft, intimate, portrait
of a young
woman coping with her boyfriend's suicide to hint that its creator's output would come to even superficially resemble the oil - slick schtick
of, say, Nicolas Winding Refn.
Bernal's is a quiet character study
of a
woman whose marriage is tested by a
child, while Silva's heartbreaking story
follows a gay teen looking for acceptance
and finding it only in the riskiest
of circumstances.
