To create a more precise atomic clock, Ludlow's team first used green and blue lasers to cool bundles
of ytterbium atoms to 10 millikelvin, or within 10 thousandths of a degree above absolute zero.
To that end the researchers utilized a pair
of ytterbium ions as quantum bits, or qubits, each confined to a private vacuum chamber about a meter apart in an experimental system at the Joint Quantum Institute of the University of Maryland and the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
While this may not seem much at first glance, the nationwide fluxes expressed in kilograms per year are quite substantial — 3000 kg of silver, 43 kg of gold, 1070 kg of gadolinium, 1500 kg of neodymium and 150 kg
of ytterbium.
In a paper published in Nature in 2016, Monroe and colleagues debuted a five - qubit quantum computer, made
of ytterbium ions, allowing scientists to carry out various quantum computations.
This was achieved by means
of ytterbium ions which were trapped in so - called «radio - frequency ion traps» in ultra-high vacuum and were cooled down to a few millikelvin with the aid of laser light.

In the experimental work from Monroe's group, physicists examined how quickly quantum connections formed in a crystal

ytterbium could find a role in super-accurate atomic clocks.
Three
of those elements —
ytterbium, erbium, and terbium — were simply given additional variants on the name
of Ytterby, while the other three were named holmium (for Stockholm), scandium, and thulium (both from the Latin for Scandinavia), in the nationalistic fashion then in favor.
The LAP team has developed a novel
ytterbium: yttrium - aluminium - garnet thin - disk laser that emits light pulses lasting 7.7 femtoseconds and consisting
of 2.2 optical oscillations.
The cooling slowed the natural motion
of the atoms to a near stop, which allowed the researchers to observe the electron spins» dance around the
Ytterbium (Yb) atoms in the YbMgGaO4 crystal.
Physicists from the University
of Tennessee succeeded in replicating the original
ytterbium crystal, and Mourigal examined it at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), where it was cooled down to a temperature
of -273.09 degrees Celsius (0.06 degrees Kelvin).
