zombie; I greatly appreciate Spielberg's attempt to deal with political process and I appreciate the lack
of «action» but somehow the context is missing and after seeing the film I know some more facts but very little about what makes these politicians tick; and the lighting is way too stylised, beautiful but unremittingly unreal, so the film falls between the stools
of docufiction and costume drama, with costume drama winning out; and the second subject
of the film - slavery - is almost complete absent (unlike Django Unchained) except as a verbal abstraction
The
story is much the same as in past games: you're stuck in a
zombie - infested city, under threat by weapons
of mass destruction that will hit in a set number
of days (though, that's really handled by chapter progression now and not an actual countdown).
And there are a couple
of effective moments: an early scene, in which we see an advancing «army» (about four men to be honest)
of zombies in the WW1 trenches is well done, and it's a shame Halperin didn't concentrate on this aspect
of the
story — had he done so he would have beaten the first horror movies (to my knowledge) to be set in the Trenches by some sixty years.
Frank is obviously unhappy to be returning to the setting
of the original US
zombie outbreak, where he was at the center
of it all and broke the
story that made him so widely known.
It's Brad Pitt leading a cast
of otherwise expendable characters in an entertaining ride, but with a flimsy
story and special effects that actually make the
zombies less scary than when they're being played by stumbling extras.
A scene in the third act which is very reminiscent
of a Clive Barker short
story comes close, as does a fight with a pregnant
zombie, but they don't quite make it.
Would you, instead
of focusing on the
story, try to save 50 survivors to unlock that achievement, or would you try to kill 53,594
zombies for another?
