But even without such a heretical solution she will realize that in
view of the complicated conditions
of our time in the moral sphere, too, many cases can no longer be decided directly by the
official judgment
of the
Church, but must be left to the individual conscience guided by the great norms
of the gospel which she announces.
Since the
church teaching office appears determined to maintain its present positions, and even to discipline some
of the theologians who propose other
views, those interested in changing the
church's
official positions must first deal with the ecclesiological question.
Caucuses are ways in which groups who find the
official positions
of the
church wrong or inadequate can organize to give voice and influence to their
views.
But precisely for this reason all Christians do not only receive a complete and supposedly concrete natural law which is communicated to them by the
official representatives
of the
Church, they also find out for them - selves the actual requirements
of public life, so that all may have as much freedom as possible, a freedom that can act with God in
view and thus create that personal finality which receives God himself as its eternal meaning.
The present position
of the
Church's
official teaching can also perhaps be made clearer by reference to the
views of theologians at the present day.
It was his
view that the Reformation / Counter-Reformation period broke the unity
of the
church and the arts by making the arts subject to the written word — that is, one formal expression became normative for
official religious expression.
It is significant that the following denominations have, in
official statements, endorsed the
view that abortion should be legally permitted in several situations: the United Presbyterian
Church, the Presbyterian
Church in the U.S., the United Methodist
Church, the United
Church of Christ, the Episcopal
Church, the Lutheran
Church in America, the Reformed
Church in America.
This rejectionism had, over time, crystallized — some would say, fossilized — into the
view that the legal establishment
of the Catholic
Church as the
official religion
of the state was the desired arrangement (the «thesis,» in the theological jargon
of the day), while other arrangements (like the American constitutional order) were mere «hypotheses» that could, under certain historical circumstances, be «tolerated» — even as Catholics in countries governed by the «hypothesis» worked for the day when the «thesis»
of Catholic establishment could be....
The study also included an effort to determine how much agreement exists between individual members»
views and the
official theological positions
of the
church, first by interviewing theologians to determine what the
official positions were, then by surveying pastors to see if these positions were taught, and finally by surveying members about their own beliefs.
Nearly all
official statements on homosexuality by these
churches in recent years have adopted some version
of the essentialist
view of homosexuality.
Marie Hendrickz,
official of the Congregation for the Doctrine
of the Faith, said that in
view of the growing popularity
of animal rights movements, the
church needs to ask itself to what extent Christ's dictum, «Do to others whatever you would have them do to you,» can be applied to the animal world.
If it ever comes up in classes or small groups, etc our only direction is to let people know the traditional
view and the our
church's
official stance (and even in that, there is a bit
of an element
of this series, don't you think?).
