There is increasing evidence that these earthquakes are caused
by injecting fluids from
oil and gas operations deep into the earth.
Earthquakes in the central U.S. have increased over the past 10 years due to the expansion of unconventional
oil and gas operations that discard wastewater
by injecting it into the ground.
As debate roils over EPA regulations proposed this month limiting the release of the potent greenhouse
gas methane during fracking
operations, a new University of Vermont study funded
by the National Science Foundation shows that abandoned
oil and gas wells near fracking sites can be conduits for methane escape not currently being measured.
While
oil and gas companies work to minimize the amount of methane emitted
by their
operations, almost no attention has been paid to wells that were drilled decades ago.
The study, conducted
by researchers at Purdue
and Cornell universities
and other institutions, is one of numerous studies conducted over the past several years that have discovered methane leaking from
oil and natural
gas wells, pipelines
and hydraulic fracturing
operations.
The most recent U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates for greenhouse
gas emissions from the
oil and natural
gas sector, released last week, show that as the number of such facilities have increased in the U.S. between 2011
and 2014, total greenhouse
gas emissions from
oil and gas operations have risen
by about 6.2 percent.
Other activities include: • pushing for stricter environmental standards for offshore
oil and gas projects • engaging a local energy company regarding their
operations • running a public campaign to raise awareness regarding the threats posed
by the Sakhalin offshore
oil and gas projects
The study,
by researchers at the University of Texas
and URS, a consulting firm — with the cooperation of (
and some funding from) the
oil and gas industry
and Environmental Defense Fund (more on that below)-- shows that much of the pollution problem lies in a small subset of poorly operating systems or faulty processes — in this case valves run pneumatically using the pressure of extracted
gas and operations that clear liquids from older wells.
But Mr. Kempthorne stressed that the decision was made under some duress, that

by ruminants (i.e., cows)
and emerges from wetlands, landfills
and much more.
South Texas, Louisiana
and other states along the Gulf Coast are especially rich in natural resources, which makes this region a target for large - scale
gas and oil operations, as well as corporations looking to profit from the mineral riches
by drilling deep into the soil.
Examples include a dispute between joint venturers over the
operation of a gold mine, a dispute charging an
oil and gas lessee with failure to prevent drainage from an
oil and gas lease, litigation over water rights, a dispute over title to sand
and gravel
and a claim for trespass
by the surface owner against the operator of a sand
and gravel mine.
