I saw that your
recipe includes coconut
oil — a firm favourite in my kitchen — and thought I should let you know I'm giving away a big plant -
based food hamper (worth over # 100) for anyone looking to start out eating plant -
based or stock up, which includes coconut
oil!
But if you really want to make it free of refined sugar, you can omit the Oreo -
based crust and use the following
recipe for a 9 - inch fluted tart pan: 1 1/2 cups almond flour, 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder, 1/4 cup raw agave syrup or coconut sugar, 3 tablespoons coconut
oil, and 1/4 tsp sea salt.

The «secret», although
based on my other
recipes probably not all that big of a secret, is that I make use of the rendered bacon fat, which acts as the «
oil» in the
recipe.
For any given
recipe, it is likely that a fat source as either butter or an
oil will likely be used in building the
base.
I think everyone should be able to enjoy a treat and so I tried to cover as many
bases as possible by making this
recipe, not only vegan, but gluten - free, grain - free, and
oil - free (I couldn't manage nut - free as well this time, sorry!)

What I love about this
recipe is that its easy, requires minimal ingredients, packs flavor, uses truffle
oil & rosemary (faves), has little calories, is great for entertaining, has a crunch factor, and more nutrients than the traditional potato
based fries!

Since moving to France, I tried making it, but the horrid
recipe used a
base of vegetable
oil (from my normally trustworthy Fanny Farmer cookbook)!
I did use a couple variations
based on the Confit Byaldi
recipe you give the link to above: 1) cooked the onion and garlic, salt and pepper in olive
oil until soft in a pan, then 2) took half a red bell pepper, cooked according to the Byaldi
recipe, chopped it and mixed into the mix above, 3) simmered the whole thing with some parsley, thyme leaves and half a bay leaf, removing the thyme and bay leaf once it heated up; 4) used sliced tomatoes instead of red bell peppers interspersed with the other veggies, and made the vinaigrette according to the Byaldi
recipe to decorate the plates / dip the ratatouille in.
I also love that you don't use
oil in the
recipe base!
Recipes call for foods that are primarily plant -
based, use healthy fats such as olive
oil instead of butter and herbs and spices instead of salt.
