oil palm areas in this study, did the presence of a 30 metre riparian zone reduce the damage to fish biodiversity.

Carrefour published its Sourcing Policy on Sustainable
Palm Oil in 2014 which includes the RSPO standard and additional criteria such as protection of peat lands and high carbon stock
areas.
«According to the World Wildlife Fund, an
area the equivalent size of 300 football fields of rainforest is cleared each hour to make way for
palm oil production.
With the aid of government agencies, large firms have been seizing swaths of land in forest
areas that were traditionally under ancestral tenure and rapidly converting them to mono - crop rubber and
oil palm plantations.
Just one
area of concern for your Australian readers is advocating consumption of
palm oil - 87 % of world consumption is sourced by our nearby neighbours via deforestation in Malaysia and Indonesia - the equivalent 0f 300 football fields is cleared every hour.
He continued: «These growers are often located in
areas where there is an urgent need for growth in the uptake of RSPO - certified sustainable
palm oil.
Unbeknown to the majority of farmers, feed manufacturers and compounders, the production of these oils can have a devastating impact not just on the climate and environment, but on economic stability and communities in the
areas where
palm oil is grown.
Palm oil is native to the tropical
areas of Africa, where it grows wild.
Just put a teaspoon or so of olive

A comparison of the performance of certified versus noncertified
oil palm plantations over a 15 - year period showed that certification reduced the rate of deforestation by 33 % — a significant reduction, yet most of the certified
areas already retained little residual forest.
Large
areas of tropical lowland forests have been replaced by
oil palm plantations, with major impact on environment and people.
Scientists travelled to Peninsular Malaysia where they spent two years studying communities of frog species in four
oil palm plantations and two
areas of adjacent forest.
ZSL, together with collaborators from Queen Mary University of London, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and University of Malaya, continues to work closely with Malaysian
palm oil producers in determining if simple modifications to agricultural practices may bring some of the forest species back into
areas planted with
oil palm and allow them to survive and reproduce in plantations.
Scientists only found this species in forest
areas, and if
palm oil plantations continue to take over, the peat swamp frog, along with its forest home, could be a thing of the past.
After studying high - resolution satellite imagery and compiling records from local and regional government agencies, the authors concluded that all land leased for
palm oil production in Indonesia added up to an
area the size of Greece.
The greatest danger, he says, is if

palm oil planters.
«Together with a 50 - hectare permanent plot in the Danum valley conservation
area and the Sabah Biodiversity Experiment, the SAFE project means that we can now study the entire gamut of land use in the region, from pristine forest to fragmented forest and restored forest, to
oil palm plantation.
Tenera
palms contain one mutant and one normal version, or allele, of Shell, an optimum combination that results in 30 % more
oil per land
area than dura
palms.
«The discovery of Shell indicates a clear path toward more intensive use of already planted lands, and thus should lessen pressures to expand the land
area devoted to
oil palm, notably onto endangered rainforest land — a major concern for the environment and a rallying point for activists in recent years,» says Robert A. Martienssen, Ph.D., scientific co-founder of Orion Genomics, who is also a professor of plant genetics at CSHL.
Ngansou and other villagers in the
area have embraced the planned
palm oil plantations as a welcome addition to a region that mostly survives on growing cassava, bananas, yam and coco, as well as the declining bush meat trade.
In deforested
areas, layers of peat — sometimes dozens of meters deep — become flammable as they dry out, which is sometimes exacerbated by deliberate draining in order to make them more suitable for
palm oil and timber plantations.

palm oil company is operating in a specific
area of Indonesia where images have shown recent forest destruction.

areas at relatively low and sustainable economic costs without heavily impacting
palm oil production.»

areas promoted biodiversity at the least cost to
oil palm companies.

However, given the potential future expansion of
oil palm plantations and other land developments onto selectively logged lands, the fate of much of Southeast Asia's biodiversity may ultimately hinge on whether the conservation community can overcome the opportunity cost of
oil palm or can encourage the implementation of large - scale landscape planning in order to reliably protect
areas critical for biodiversity.
Despite the significant obstacle to conservation that
oil palm plantations represent, the
area under logging concessions still dwarfs that under
oil palm.
Given their potential cost - effectiveness, logged forests represent an opportunity to increase connectivity between protected
areas and to enlarge existing parks, two goals that are becoming increasingly urgent in Southeast Asia as existing parks are illegally degraded or become increasingly isolated by conversion of adjacent
areas to
oil palm plantations and other agricultural lands.
«Our study suggests... [the] initiative will not significantly reduce deforestation in northern Sumatra and will have little impact on orangutan conservation,» David Gaveau of the University of Kent, UK, and the Wildlife Conservation Society Indonesia Program told environmentalresearchweb, «because firstly a large amount of forest inside the proposed REDD project
area is protected de facto by being inaccessible; and secondly much of northern Sumatra's lowland forests will remain outside of REDD and will be exposed to the combined expansion of high - revenue
oil palm plantations and road networks.»
Critics, however, say companies have merely «exported» their deforestation by purchasing massive amounts of timber, soybeans, and
palm oil from
areas where deforestation is rife — undermining efforts to slow deforestation by promoting sustainable sourcing of raw materials.
Greenpeace, for example, explains that the new plant in Singapore is likely to cause more environmental problems, not fewer, by increasing demand for new
palm oil plantations that displace environmentally sensitive forests or wetland
areas.

areas and mills on a global scale, as well as to focus attention on new
areas where
palm oil production is having an impact on forests.

oil palm and pulp, the gap could easily be met by this «conversion timber.»
Brands seems to have good intentions with this commitment, which will require the company to buy
palm oil exclusively for cooking purposes that protects all forests and peatlands, swampy
areas of carbon - rich soil.
JAKARTA — More than a hundred

area of peat forest the size of the state of Connecticut,...
A computer illustration created by the wildlife activist group WWF - Indonesia using Google Earth provides a tour of Sumatran rain forest
areas at risk of destruction by logging companies and
palm oil producers.
With
oil palm plantations covering vast
areas of once - rainforest of Southeast Asia — primarily Indonesia and Malaysia — and encroaching into other tropical countries around the world, many now see
palm oil as a scourge rather than a savior.
The designation could increase the
area of forest conserved within
oil palm plantations provided it has high conservation significance, such as serving as habitat for endangered species like orangutans, Sumatran tigers, and rhinos.
The criteria include: using natural pests and composting in place of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers whenever possible; implementing no - burn policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and cut the risk of fires spreading into forest
areas; sparing forests with high conservation value from development; taking measures to reduce air pollution; and creating catchment ponds to prevent
palm oil mill effluent — a byproduct — from entering waterways where it would damage aquatic habitats.
To commit to no conversion of primary forests and high conservation value
areas, as well as to limit the conversion of natural forests for
oil palm plantations to the highest extent possible,
Scientists estimate that converting a forest
area into an industrial
palm oil plantation results in the death or displacement of over 95 % of the orangutans who originally lived in the
area.

In a December 2013 warning to potential investors in a US$ 90 million initial public offering for PT SSS, EIA revealed an independent evaluation of the firm's prospectus showed illegal clearance of forest
areas and direct threats to orangutan habitat posed by planned expansion of the firm's
oil palm plantations.
