But getting
oil straight from
source rock is difficult.
Onshore and in shallow waters,
oil companies use hydraulic fracturing or «fracking» techniques to blast cracks into
source rock and release the
oil, but fracking at the ocean depths where MacMullin and Wilson wanted to look is exceptionally difficult and expensive, and companies are only just starting to take it on.
