Okonomiyaki: The Best Food in Japan Japan continues to top our favorite trips list, with Hiroshima being one of our favorite places in Japan.
The Okonomiyaki (Japanese cabbage pancake) was especially stellar, but we also LOVED the curry and the Som Tum with Chicken.
After several Japanese lagers and dishes including curried udon, grilled edamame, assorted sashimi and
okonomiyaki all shared family - style, we squeezed our way outside and finished up the night in classic Shinjuku style: a visit to the famed Robot Restaurant.

Okonomiyaki is one of those dishes I actually was fortunate enough to sample In Japan, as being vegetarian made it sometimes excruciatingly difficult to sustain myself.

While we were there we got to go to one of her friends home and she made
us okonomiyaki.

By the way, Japanese pizza is great expression for
okonomiyaki because it's one of our soul food for Japanese!
Mmmm... I love it, but you HAVE to put mayo and
okonomiyaki sauce on top... it's what makes it so delicious!
I've tried this in restaurants before, and it is amazing, esp with
the okonomiyaki sauce and japanese mayo and bonito flakes on top.

coincidentally, it was on a trip to kyoto that my husband and i finally sat down in
an okonomiyaki restaurant, only to discover it really wasn't anything like pizza at all!
Thank you so much for this recipe - I have a friend living in Japan this year who raves about
okonomiyaki, and have been longing to try it, but the only recipes I've found have been well complicated.
My fave
okonomiyaki place in Japan did an amazing chicken and almond version that was unique amidst the standard pork and seafood (which are still very good).
