Particularly Kindle Fire because that's much easier to browse the store than
the old Kindles or even the phone.
Interestingly, now that we have gone through all that work of updating
our old Kindles, Amazon is offering us another shot at trading - in and getting a coupon good towards an upgrade.
It seems odd that Amazon.com still shows all of
the old Kindles and none of those announced today.
I predict it will do very well this xmas, as there are a lot of
old Kindles in drawers that need to be replaced, but beyond that — I expect it will fall into the same problem as Android tablets generally (ie, no money for devs) and development will dry up.
This allows
the old Kindles to take advantages of new features such as the improved web browser, better PDF support, page numbers, and more.
The books sold by amazon are designed for the low - resolution kindles; so, with paperwhite and other high resolution devices, the maximum size appears much smaller than

Even after all this time, with so many
old Kindles filling drawers and landfills, the touchscreen functions are not intuitive.
Even
the old Kindles offer a great reading experience and there isn't any compelling reason to upgrade.
Otherwise, IPG could switch to Nook books (insisting that they be sold DRM - free) and advertise that readers are free to convert their old Kindle books to run on the Nook, or their new Nook books to run on
their old Kindles.
Last year I traded in a couple of
old Kindles for a pretty good stack of cash (well, Amazon store credit anyway).
There price of new Kindles just keeps on dropping, and the price of
old Kindles is dropping even faster.
Many people have pinged Amazon tech support and the canned answer is «it is a matter of incompatible format; that is, none of the books will work on
the old Kindles, the solution is to buy a new Kindle.»
Even if people upgrade to newer models, they will not abandon
their old Kindles.
It will also be a useful reference for those of us who sometimes shop for
old Kindles on eBay.
Old Kindles will remain in substantial use for what will seem like an eternity.
These aren't conversion problems, per se;
old Kindles and Kindle for iOS display a version of the mobi file (MOBI7) that is based on old PalmPilot technology; it can't handle sophisticated formatting at all.
One of their hallmarks has been their aim at the best possible typography on both newer and
older Kindles.
The old kindle DX had this function and was superior for those visually impaired.
But what I can do is trying to get it running on
my old kindle fire hdx 7.
The PNGs with transparent background only work in some of the ePub readers and some of

KF8 files are a kind of Frankenstein monster with an ePub file to load onto newer Kindles and Kindle apps and an old mobi file to load onto
older Kindles.
The big problem with the introduction of the KF8 format is that Amazon is doing a pretty hack job with this, I am very sorry to say, because, according to Amazon's announcement and FAQ, none of
the older Kindles will be able to support this format.

(2) Some of the new stuff just isn't going to be of much use on
the older Kindles without color support, and some seems mostly aimed at future higher resolution or larger screen devices.
Amazon used to advertise this on screensaver images for
older Kindles, like the Kindle Keyboard, but they don't seem to bring much attention to it anymore.
Add $ 20 - $ 40 to the cost of
the older Kindles in order to add in an attachable light and this price looks great.
And
the older Kindles have been open to hacks for years so why would they create a fix for a newer hack that's not even needed for them?

It's trivially easy to get the same effect using a 1 - cell table, and that does work on
older Kindles, but the Kindle formatting guidelines emphatically say to «use tables for tabular data only,» and not for formatting purposes of any kind.
You need PNG files that are 758 x 1024 pixels instead of 600 x 800 pixels as for
the older Kindles.
Then, a) de-register
the old kindle, and b) reset
the old kindle to factory setting which will empty the kindle.
More interesting are the new PagePress controls, which mimic the physical controls of
older Kindles but using pressure - sensitive «haptics» instead.
Amazon will also be adding the feature to
older Kindles that have wireless connectivity for accessibility reasons, but the new Oasis is getting it first.
