Should I change
old ebook files to this new format?

Ebooks from traditional publishers have DRM and can't be converted — I know this because I tried converting some of MY
old Fictionwise
files and was informed it wasn't doable.
And like iTunes, Calibre has the ability to convert between one
ebook format and another: between ePub and mobi (
old Kindle) or AZW3 (newer Kindle), say, or between LIT format
files and ePub, so that you can read that
old Microsoft Reader book on the iBooks app of your iPad or Mac.
If OverDrive supported app
file sharing, I could have used iTunes to copy the
ebooks from the
old iPad to the new one.
The best way to test an
ebook is to download the
file and load it onto a Kindle — preferably several, ideally of different generations (i.e.,
old - style Kindle, Paperwhite, Kindle Fire)
One could legitimately argue that it's no longer necessary to make
ebook files for the
older Kindle format and just stick to KF8.
Exporting to epub from InDesign gives you a ePub 3.0 validated
file, but remember I've had problems with that on
older ebook models.
In the
old days, you would have needed separate processes and professionals in order to get
ebook - and print - on - demand - ready versions of your book
files.
Secondly, if you have downloaded the
ebook before, and install the Adobe Digital Editions again now (or update the Adobe Digital Editions), you have to delete the
old EPUB
file first, then download it again through the new Adobe Digital Editions, or it also can't be converted.

I tried to download an updated version of a MOBI
ebook, but only the
old version is showing Before you try to download a newer version of a MOBI
file to your Kindle or Kindle for XX (XX = PC, Mac, Android, etc) app, delete the
old MOBI
file from your app or device, then try again.
The Kindle
ebook is a single
file that contains two versions of the content: one in Kindle Format 8 and one in the
older Kindle format.
