the old question which the Reformers asked of the Church of Rome, and which has cropped up again and again in the discussions within the Protestant church.

Thereby a theological chasm is once again arising between the Christian and the Jew that is perhaps as great or even greater than it has been in the past, a chasm leading the Christian to

which he knows as
Old Testament is not the Scripture
which is known to the Jew.
Both are real and baffling
questions to
which the reincarnation teaching claims to supply a simple answer: New souls are simply
old souls in new bodies.
The tradition in
question here was a matter of the distinction between clean and unclean,
which is prominent both in the
Old Testament and in the oral law.
Unfortunately, my Baptist pastor father used to answer issues regarding the Bible I thought were questionable with the
old «you're
questioning the Bible, therefore God» to
which I would reply «no, I'm
questioning your interpretation of the Bible».
This is one of the
oldest questions in the world, far
older of course than the
Old Testament book of Job,
which makes some attempt to deal with it.
The very extent to
which these new emphases are merely the reversed image of the
old ones raises
questions.
This is why, at one point in the book, I grant the Gnostics of
old the validity of their
questions, though I go on to revile the answers at
which they arrived.
That kind of blows apart the
old «sheep and shepherd» story that most Christians believe without
question and
which most pastors love to toss out at their «stupid sheep» languishing in the pews.
Edwin Scott Gaustad in his Historical Atlas of Religion in America (Harper & Row, 1962) takes us back to that time, citing a March 1957 Bureau of the Census survey in
which persons 14 years of age and
older were
questioned about their religious preference.
And indeed the

old and is raised now and always, and is always the subject of doubt, viz, what being is, is just the
question, what is substance?
One of the accounts in the Hebrew Scriptures
which does a masterful job of portraying this age -
old question about the nature and character of God is the book of Jonah.

So perhaps Ms. Peeters» film can tell us some things about us as well — it does not hesitate, after all, to move its camera from the harassing men onto the various soft - porn advertisements that also haunt the streets of Brussels, and ask the
old - fashioned feminist
question, one
which Ms. Brown's magazine actively mocked and undermined, «How can we be respected when images like this are displayed and circulated?»
This is the
question with
which the Messianic promises of the
Old Testament are concerned.
To take Mark's presentation of Jesus» teaching as normative, or final — as on the
older «Marcan hypothesis» — is simply out of the
question, and sets before the Christian religion, as we have seen, a problem
which nineteen centuries have now demonstrated to be insoluble.

In all of this there is not a single item
which is not at home within Judaism, just as there is no single remark of Jesus
which can not with some degree of closeness be paralleled in the
Old Testament or in other Jewish literature, but taken as a whole Jesus» teaching, without any
question, represents a highly distinctive and original apprehension of reality.
So many
questions, but we don't get to choose the word of the year (The runner - up is «nostalgia»
which also seems just about as
old as time itself, but at least it's entered sort of a boom season, so that makes a little more sense).
The period
which spawns a Great Awakening is a time when the realities of life in society have deviated so far from their moral and religious understandings that the authority of the
old institutions are
questioned.
There's one park nearby
which is kind of the «hippie» park, and that's where I find the moms who are more prone to talk to me and not just ask how

In seeking a solution to the problem of divine violence in the
Old Testament, I was quite hesitant to accept any view
which called into
question the traditional understandings of the inspiration or inerrancy of Scripture.
I love the
old line of reasoning
