I too had
old shelf paper that was glued down and hideous.

It's a set decorator's version of a biologist's home:
old brass microscopes, an ostrich egg on the mantle, tottering piles of research
papers, and thousands of books heaped on groaning
shelves.
The unit, meant to introduce 5 - year -
olds to algebraic thinking, includes three short pencil - and -
paper exams, culminating with a test that asks students to calculate all the ways they could divide six books between two
shelves.
I understood later that my father had either half forgotten what was on one of the top
shelves or — more likely — assumed I would never be able to reach it; late one night I took down not only a translation of the Kama Sutra but also a much
older volume and an envelope of yellowing
papers.
For my
shelves, that included removing the
old contact
paper, removing nails, and giving the
shelves a good sanding.
I plan to add some
shelves soon for extra storage and not shown in the photos is an
old media console / cabinet which I'm using as storage for files,
papers, and writing materials.
