When you run your search
on ANA's site, make sure you choose flights that are operated
by United Airlines, since many other Star Alliance partners will require you to pay significant
fuel surcharges.
Fuel surcharges are going to be significant if you want to fly British Airways in First Class, but using your miles is still a great way to access a ticket that would otherwise cost $ 5,000 or more one - way — especially if you can pair your redemption with a Travel Together Ticket earned

Unfortunately,

on partner bookings, but you can always avoid or mitigate those fees
by flying with United.
Asiana Club miles offer some of the best value among Star Alliance carriers
on flights to Europe, particularly if you avoid
fuel surcharges by flying
on United or Air Canada.
On these routes,
fuel surcharges can be an issue with Aeroplan but you can get around them
by booking with the following airlines:
And yes,
on most awards British Airways still passes along «
fuel surcharges» which have nothing to do with
fuel and are therefore better known
by their technical name «Blended Use Landing Levies for Safety, Health & Information Technologies.»
Flights intra South America can be expensive but you can offset the costs
by using your Avios to bounce around
on short flights that carry minimal taxes /
fuel surcharges.
Something to be aware of with Avios is that
fuel surcharges are charged
on flights operated
by some airlines.
Delta SkyMiles will collect
fuel surcharges on its own flights when departing Europe as well as for flights operated
by Aeroflot, Air Europea, Air Tahiti Nui, Kenya Airways, China Eastern, China Southern, and Kenya Airways.

fuel surcharges (the first screenshot shows YQ for 2 people) and still have 4 hours to play in a suite between Hong Kong and Singapore, because that route is served

New ANA Airways Award Chart — More
on Fuel Surcharges and Some Revisions Now, let me begin
by saying what I hate about their new program the most.
If you are traveling through London, you can save hundreds of dollars
by flying
on American Airlines across the Atlantic, then transferring to British Airways in Europe for the flight to Santorini since BA does not impose
fuel surcharges on flights within Europe.
As you may have noticed above, if you are using miles
on an airline that adds a
fuel surcharge you may be able to get around it
by redeeming
on a partner airline.
You can book these partners
by calling in to Singapore Airlines and take advantage of their very reasonable redemption rates but you will have to pay
fuel surcharges, since Singapore Airlines charges them
on every partner airlines except for United.
British Airways is being sued
by a group of flyers for imposing
fuel surcharges on award tickets.
Hopefully that change doesn't also get matched
by the British Airways version of the program, especially since you can move points from Iberia to BA to make those redemptions with the arbitrage then saving
on fuel surcharges (just as the reverse version of arbitrage can be used to save
on fuel surcharges when redeeming for Iberia flights).
Then in 2011 Aeroplan announced a huge award chart devaluation, which was quickly followed
by them adding
fuel surcharges for travel
on most Star Alliance partner carriers without advance notice.
Though you can use Avios to fly
on British Airways from the U.S. to Great Britain, the high fees and
fuel surcharges charged
by British Airways will often cancel out the savings of an award ticket.
