The summer's unusual heat and abundance of hungry insects had promised an iffy tomato season anyway, but, needless to say, by the end of September, it was clear I would miss out on my yearly homegrown tomato activities: no weekends of steamy kitchen windows with boiling pots of canned sauce featuring my prized Cherokee Purples; no homemade, slow - simmered San Marzano tomato paste; no sheet pans lining the counters with roasted black cherry tomatoes (the best tomato flavor on this earth, ever).

I haven't been acquainted with the regular use of a microwave for fifteen years, and while I'm no stranger to popping my popcorn using the old - fashioned method of a hot pot on the stovetop, last summer I wised up to my time consuming ways and purchased a Whirley Pop Popcorn Popper, which is now one of the hardest working tools in my kitchen.

I found this recipe on Smitten Kitchen last summer and have been wanting to make them ever since.

Well needless to say, last summer I had a winning streak of exceptional watermelons until that one really gross, cracked on the inside, sad watermelon was staring up at me... I just spent $ 6 or $ 7 on this and lugged it from the farmer's market to my truck and then to my kitchen.

Icecream, milk, and sometimes a little bit of hot chocolate powder, mash mash mash with a fork (kitchen machines and mixers were still a little out of my repetoire at this point... And the fork worked surprisingly well:P) and it was the most delicious thing on a hot Summer's day!

Slow cookers are a blessing in the summer, since I have no air conditioning in my kitchen I don't want to turn on any extra heat sources when it is over 90 and humid every day!

And a recent LA Times article reminded me I had never tried the potato pizza I saw on Smitten Kitchen two summers ago.

Summer's still on and it's officially «peach week» here at The Kitchen Girl headquarters.

Previous attempts at the flaky French classic included a version made in a hundred - degree kitchen on a San Fernando Valley Summer's day, and one «healthy» version made with spelt flour and yogurt.

Remember that a cabinet near the oven is often too warm, as is a cabinet on an outside wall of your kitchen if it receives heat from a strong afternoon or summer sun.

First conceived on a dreamy summer day with two of my gal pals and inspired by Heidi Swanson's «Super Natural Every Day,» this outrageously delicious and healthy recipe has become a mainstay at Frisch Kitchen.

Even though we can use air - conditioning to mitigate summer heat in the kitchen, being able to make cold soups without turning on a single burner is a gift on the hottest days.

The most sensible way to eat the first peaches of summer is leaning over the kitchen sink or sitting outside on the grass.

I am proud of the fact that in the hot summer heat of late August, when I spend hours on end in the kitchen chopping, canning, blanching and freezing, I will have a freezer and larder full of our homegrown food to get us through the winter.

I know I'm not even finished with My Living Room Makeover yet, but I'm already starting to think about working on my kitchen before summer is over.

I was going to build it and put in my backyard, but we're going to have it as the kitchen on the dig next summer.

And during those stifling summer days I am grateful this is so, because when the temperature in my kitchen creeps up into the high eighties, you can't pay me enough to turn on any heat - emitting appliance!

These are few and far between during the summer months, as turning on the oven in my AC-less kitchen makes me borderline suicidal, but I decided to bite the steamy kitchen bullet last week in the name of my favorite healthy comfort food and an expletive - laced Logan compliment rant.

Compared to their summer squash cousins, they have thick skins which means longer storage life and obligatory decoration on your kitchen counter.
