No word yet
on the Vermaelen injury, but it seems likely he won't take part in Monday's game.
He wouldn't be a poor signing by any means, just not really much of an improvement
on Vermaelen, for example.
Can't agree
on Vermaelen.
Chambers is an improvement
on Vermaelen (who could also play on the left, but Chambers can also play on the right), Monreal and of course Flamini, the left Full - back for AC Milan and before that Arsenal FC before Wenger tried him in Midfield.
The 1st summer transfer window with Gazidis and we only spend
on Vermaelen and for a fee of around # 10 million.
If nothing else, such vote of confidence indicates that Chambers is an upgrade
on Vermaelen and we all love Chambers for his solid performances so far.
While Vermaelen has more experience than Chambers, early performances so far indicate that Chambers is an improvement
on Vermaelen.
Not exact matches
Two years ago Wenger promised to replace
Vermaelen but strangely went for Debuchy and Chamberlain and then even more weirdly spent 16 mill
on Wellbeck.
But as I write this 2 days before the transfer window closes the Gunners have so far spent approx 10 million
on Debuchy (a direct replacement for Sagna), 4 million
on Ospina (who takes Fabianski's place) while the
Vermaelen money was used to bring in Chambers.
Getting rid of
Vermaelen, Sagna, Jenkison (
on loan), Miquel and Djourou, then getting only Debuchy and Chambers is mismanagement I reckon.
Manchester United missed out
on the likes of Mats Hummels and Thomas
Vermaelen this summer, and their lack of a world class centre back has been exposed
on several occasions already this season, no more so than in Sunday's 5 - 3 thrashing by Premier League new boys Leicester City.
Just because our last two captains Arteta and
Vermaelen spent more time in the treatment room than
on the pitch does not make it a good idea, so it seemed logical that the boss would hand it to another player who would be playing and it was reported that it could be our midfield maestro Santi Cazorla.

on transfer deadline day, getting players like Kim Kallstrom, Squillaci, Silvestre, etc..)
The minimum Wenger should be able to spend this summer is # 70m, plus the Vela sale, Fabregas sell

Vermaelen fee, we've spent around # 60m, we should have quite a lot left in the bank.
Wenger promised to replace
Vermaelen but did not because he bought Wellbeck for 16 mill when Giroud got injured (don't believe the cr # p about the board buying Wellbeck either) 10 mill
on Cech, 12 mill
on Debuchy and 16 mill
on Chambers both failures and 35 mill
on Sanchez meant Wenger risked having only 2 specialist CB's.
No doubt we all have our own opinion
on which defender Wenger should sign, but I bet not many of you have thought of our old club captain Thomas

I agree, but Chambers was
Vermaelen's replacement; I have a feeling Chambers is covering both CB and RB (as first choice backup) but Bellerin is meant to take the RB role if the defence is overloaded with injury, i'm surprised he hasn't been named as 1st player
on Arsenal.com (pretty sure he is in the picture though).
The signs were always there with
Vermaelen, he gained a reputation early
on largely because he was scoring goals and I think his defending was less scrutinised as a result.
