She talked with Education World
about her views
on grammar instruction.
Speaking
on The Andrew Marr Show this morning, he said that new
grammar schools would not be opened, but that «we are talking
about being able to expand existing [
grammar schools]».
So we have schools that purchase books like Everyday Math, which eschews honest arithmetic in favor of fuzzy math and the overuse of calculators; Teachers College Writers Workshop, which downplays
grammar but obsesses
about the «process» of writing (a process that's not based in any research); and all manner of reading programs that fixate
on «skills» while ignoring literature, history, science, and everything else that might make reading an enjoyable and enlightening experience (and that might actually prepare kids to understand what will be taught to them downstream).
The research, which is published with the Sutton Trust's response to the government's consultation
on providing more good school places, raises serious concerns
about using
grammar schools in their current form as a vehicle for social mobility.
He added: «We have to have a great debate
about exactly what numeracy and literacy are, what levels are required and so
on, and of course, they have to be interpreted in a broad way that's not just
about grammar, not just
about doing sums.
The Sunday Telegraph quoted an unnamed government source as saying that allowing new
grammars would be
about «social mobility and making sure that people have the opportunity to capitalise
on all of their talents».
The argument
about grammar schools has also acquired a political edge:
grammar schools are a shibboleth for lots
on the right.
They found that
about 2 % of
grammar school pupils were from low income families -
on free school meals - compared with 12 % of pupils at non-
grammar schools.
While they waste time and energy
on new
grammars, they have nothing to say
about falling school budgets, the crisis in teacher recruitment and retention, and the lack of good school places.
We need to be able to move it
on and step away from the old - fashioned debate
about grammar schools, and work out where they fit [in the system].»
So, instead of talking
about your book, you may have more success if you put together lectures for other writers
on marketing,
grammar or editing.
Reader complaints
about editing quality usually focus
on grammar and word choice and usage.
