about grammar schools that you can just transplant into a failing
school, does not stack up,» he said.

schools that purchase books like Everyday Math, which eschews honest arithmetic in favor of fuzzy math and the overuse of calculators; Teachers College Writers Workshop, which downplays
grammar but obsesses
about the «process» of writing (a process that's not based in any research); and all manner of reading programs that fixate
on «skills» while ignoring literature, history, science, and everything else that might make reading an enjoyable and enlightening experience (and that might actually prepare kids to understand what will be taught to them downstream).
The research, which is published with the Sutton Trust's response to the government's consultation
on providing more good
school places, raises serious concerns
about using
grammar schools in their current form as a vehicle for social mobility.
The argument
about grammar schools has also acquired a political edge:
grammar schools are a shibboleth for lots
on the right.
They found that
about 2 % of
grammar school pupils were from low income families -
on free
school meals - compared with 12 % of pupils at non-
grammar schools.
While they waste time and energy
on new
grammars, they have nothing to say
about falling
school budgets, the crisis in teacher recruitment and retention, and the lack of good
school places.
We need to be able to move it
on and step away from the old - fashioned debate
about grammar schools, and work out where they fit [in the system].»
