It is my hope that as a result of segments like the one
on 20/20 and the fact that more women are feeling comfortable speaking out
about long - term
nursing (as evidenced by all of the comments and Tweets I received), that others will not feel like they need to be «closet nursers» nor feel pressured by family, friends or society in general to wean before they feel it is right for them and their child.
I wrote my thoughts
about this shortly before her fourth birthday in a post titled
On Nursing a Preschooler.
The
nurses & LCs were pretty good
about helping with getting bfing started, they showed me a variety of ways to hold the baby, hand express some milk onto the nipple to get her started (she didn't want to suck, although positioning was perfect & she'd suck
on a finger if it was put in her mouth) One
nurse tried sugar water
on my nipple, which I wasn't okay with, but it was the middle of the night, I was overwhelmed and frustrated, and baby blues had set in.
I'm not saying it's good that formula companies pave the way for
nursing moms to give up, but I am skeptical
about how much of a real impact it would have
on long - term BF even if these «kits» disappeared tomorrow.
We're working
on night weaning with Julian right now and I don't think that will be an issue come July, but what
about nursing during the day?
My daughter Maxine's first fall came when she was
about two months old: I used to let her sleep
on the couch nestled in her Boppy

on its own (again no

nurse when you're
on the road without worrying
about delays.
You don't have to worry
about washing it off before you
nurse your little one, which makes this a very convenient type of balm to keep
on hand at all times, too.

Once you get comfortable and confident with your own way of
nursing in public it will become incredibly easy and convenient to be out and
about anywhere with your child (even up hill and down dale

If you have concerns
about nursing while consuming birth control hormones, there are many other birth control options that will have absolutely no effect
on your baby, like condoms, IUDs and diaphragms.
I am now a labor and delivery
nurse, and i do ANYTHING I can to help a woman who WANTS to breastfeed, or who is
on the fence
about it.
