A nationwide survey
on access to legal services, which is currently underway, will ultimately help improve public access to justice, Minister of Justice Mark Burton said today.
The Frankie Muse Freeman Organizational Pro Bono Award was established by the Special Committee
on Access to Legal Services of the Virginia State Bar in 2016 to honor organizations that have made outstanding contributions in the area of pro bono legal services for the poor.

to devote more attention or expenditure
to public provision of
legal services for people living
on low income, exploring ways
to harness private sector innovations may be the most realistic avenue for improving
access to justice for that segment of the population.

Alternative structures and ending the lawyer monopoly
on legal services are fundamentally about
access to justice and equal protection of the law.
For every hour spent teaching students how
to access information (in books,
on the paid
services, or
on the open web), professors should devote many more hours
to assuring that students understand
legal authority and gain significant experience actually working with it.
Because two of the three
legal aid sources are predominately supported by lawyers, decision makers should consider the potential impact
on access to justice if lawyers were
to dramatically reduce their time / financial support of pro bono
services and
legal aid programs, which is likely as competition increases and the social contract under which lawyers and society have operated Vis a Vis the state sponsored monopoly continues
to unwind.
Further, any woman who has an unwanted pregnancy while attending TWU will face an unconscionable restriction
on her autonomy in having
to continue with that pregnancy or face expulsion or other discriminatory sanction for
accessing legal abortion
services.

Finally, a global initiative hosted by the United Nations and led by high profile policymakers, including US Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, has recommended the liberalization of the regulation of
legal services in order
to allow nonlawyers and community - based organizations and advocacy groups
to provide
legal services to the poor, stating that «it is likely
to improve
access to justice for the poor substantially while imposing relatively few costs
on society,» and that a «major attraction» of such liberalization is that it may require «fewer government or donor expenditures.»
